Matt Wilson at the Express and Star telling it like it is and what we all feared
Idiot wouldn't even loan the club money for transfers forcing the Bank loan,
Thanks a lot Lai do us all a favor sell up and fook off !!
Guochuan Lai’s current financial model for #wba is unsustainable in the Championship - a crazy league where owners foot the bill - and it puts pressure on winning promotion https://t.co/XMb1FMgXCA

Good article - as you say, Beefy, tells it like it is, in simple terms.
Seems like Lai never thought of the possibility of us going down, and now he's forked.
From here I can only see 3 scenarios :
1) Lai invests enough NOW to ensure we go up..... obviously not happening
2) He cuts his losses and sells
3) We stay down, parachute payments end and we join the ranks of reality, like Leeds, the 2 Sheffields, Norwich, Bolton, Wigan etc.
Arguably some of those are 'bigger clubs' than us in terms of fan base and resources; some are doing well now but have all struggled for a few years to maintain even an average footing in the Championship.
Sadly it seems like every club needs a sugar daddy to be successful - whatever that means - in the top 2 divisions.
I may be wrong but aren't Norwich doing it atm WITHOUT massive backing? If so, fair play - bloody well done and good luck to them!

Good points Drewk's
The main problem here though I fear is that unless Lai takes a huge loss if he sells we are stuck with him.
No way will he recoup half of that 200 million If he sells why we are in the Championship.

He had £40 million in the bank when he purchased the club, he can get that back and raise money against the clubs assets to get some money back without selling the club. Shite I know but that's the facts. Bit like the Chadli fee that's disappeared and don't give me the old we've only had a third of it - that's how football works do you think we pay upfront when we sign anyone. It's all bullshit to cloud the siphoning off of the clubs money. The loan when repaid makes sure we have no money to spend in the, summer. More quality players will have to go and Jenkins and Lai will take the lions share of fees and parachute payments before they dump us. With a poor squad. Assets mortgaged and no cash. JP really did sell us lock stock and barrel.

I don't think there's anything surprising in the article, it's pretty much common sense.
We have several players in the squad that were purchased from Prem sides who would be on Premier League wages - Rodriguez, Livermore, Gibbs, Barry etc. Then you have players who have been here for years, but had massive pay rises when we were 'established' in the Premier League, such as Dawson, Brunt, Mozza.
All of these players are huge earners by Championship standards.Gibbs was on close to £100,000 per week when we signed him, even if he had a relegation clause, he's probably the division's highest earner.
Our loan like Gayle and Holgate will be on Premier League wages too.
It's fairly obvious this wouldn't be sustainable long term in the Championship. Peace operated the club the same way as Lai is operating it, so this situation wouldn't have been sustainable under Peace either.
In fact, if you think back to the relegation and subsequent promotion in the Mowbray era, the same thing happened then. It's almost a carbon copy of now. We were relegated and when we didn't get promoted in the first season (beaten in the playoff final) we has to sell big earners like of Curtis Davies, Kamara, Ellington Koumas etc.
Fortunately we were able to replace them with relative unknowns like Bednar, Koren, Dorrans and Teixeira and some affordable young talent - Brunt and Mozza, who actually turned out to be good. With this side we won the league.
And that's the big difference with the Peace and Lai administrations. While neither Peace or Lai are willing to put their hand into the their pocket, Peace was far better advised by the people around him. It doesn't *appear* that the people advising Lai have a clue. I hope I'm wrong, but that's my gut instinct based on some of the ridiculous decisions we have seen since he took over.
But there are massive similarities to that Mowbray era and if we do fail to get promoted, all of the above high earners will go and have to be replaced by cheaper players. However, I wouldn't hold my breath that we would be able to recruit as well as 2007/2008 given the people who make decisions at the club these days seem to be totally clueless.

The other difference is that JP was a fan and did care about the club whereas Lai doesn't give a sh1t about the club

To be honest I always thought Peace's primary interest was a business one, rather than that of a fan.
It was a money making exercise for both him and Lai, Peace just did a better job of it.
