I've watched enough German and Italian football this season to see the good that VAR brings to the modern game but it has to be implemented in a successful way. The Germans use it with typical good German efficiency and that is the way we have to use it. In Italy it is not as good with too long breaks for VAR checks and the refs are not strong enough to deal with player and fan pressure.

It will just be a case of everyone having to adjust to it.

So far it’s use has seen the correct decions being made, that is a good thing. The reality is the vast majority of goals scored have nothing to review in terms of offside, fouls etc, so the VAR system won’t slow anything down there. It does need to improve in terms of the time it takes to make decisions at times but that will come with time and getting used to using it. The biggest issue is communication between the ref and the fans or tv audience, this is the part they need to look at and find a system where everyone knows what is going on. As long as they have very clear guidelines as to what gets reviewed and the refs only use it when they are not sure then I think its a good thing.
