Every Chesterfield fan of my advanced age must feel slightly guilty to learn of the passing of Tony Moore. The crowd demoralised him and tore his confidence to shreds. And I was one of them.

To be a worse winger than Neil Warnock and yet still play 153 games takes some doing. He wasn't without ability but his game would quickly unravel amidst the catcalls.

It was cruel that our favourite chant was "Send Tony Moore to Vietnam!" I'm sorry Tony. Cancer at a young age, which then returned, and a relatively early death are poor rewards for a good-hearted player who always tried, but was very rarely able to perform as he clearly would have liked.

Tony was just a bit before my time .My first team if I can remember was about '72 but I was very young .Tingay ,Albert Holmes, Ken Tiler,Ken Burton ,Arthur Bellamy ,Ernie etc.
I always remember thinking what old men's names they had .

You didn't see Alan Stevenson in goal ........ he was pure class. Tony Moore came into a very poor team. The crowd was always ready to lose. Until McGuigan got us Archer and Fenoughty etc we were dire.

I played cricket with Phil Tingay, he was older than me, a very good all-rounder and possibly the best fielder I ever saw at ANY level. I played football against him. People thought I was the best keeper in the Sunday League after Chesterfield nabbed him. Quite soon afterwards I changed teams and started proving them wrong.

The few away games I saw featuring Tony Moore he was miles better than he ever was at home. Sad that he was just good enough to make himself unhappy!
