THE MATCH - SATURDAY 5TH MARCH 2016 3PM KO

[Image: 150px-Sheffield_Wednesday.svg.png]    v    [Image: 125px-Rotherham_United_FC.png]

For the last few years this fixture has seen us up against a manager that is almost universally disliked in the huge form of Steve Evans!!! But he has now moved onto the most hated club in English football, so has found his calling, but he has been replaced by our old foe Colin!! This is definitely a game that based on league position and us being at home is one we should be winning, but with this not only being a local derby and now with Colin at the helm you know that they will be fired up to give us a battle!! Lets hope that CC has been made aware of our history with Colin and that he and the coaching staff have drilled into the team that they will not be pushovers!! Of course our recent drop of points in the last three games should hopefully be enough to keep the whole squad on their toes!!

This will only be our 34th meeting with Rovrum and our record is fairly good at W17 D5 L11.  Our home record against them is awful though, standing at W5 D2 L8, and we have not beaten them at Hillsborough for 6 games with the last win being in 1981!!  This in itself should be a warning to us that they almost certainly raise their game when they get to play against their big city neighbors!! Earlier this season we won the game at the New York Stadium 2-1 with goals from Joao and Forestieri before a last minute consolation goal for them.

THE ROAD AHEAD

For this game lets take a look at what position in the playoffs we would prefer to get to give ourselves a statistically better chance of promotion.

For the last 23 seasons the playoff have produced the following results:

Reaching the final
3rd - 15
4th - 11
5th - 12
6th - 8
So ideally if we want to get to at least the final we need to finish 3rd (65% of finalists) or 5th (52%), and definitely not 6th (35%)!!! Sick

Winners
3rd - 8
4th - 4
5th - 7
6th - 4

Runner Up
3rd - 7
4th - 7
5th - 5
6th - 4
So looking at this finishing 5th means your chances of reaching the final are good but then more often than not that team also goes on to win it 58% of the time as well!! 3rd place teams still win as many finals but more of them also lose in the final (50%).

So based on my stats ( Whistle ) we need to overcome Derby and take that 5th spot to give us the best chance of promotion via the playoffs!!!

THE LAST MATCH

Don't really need to say much about our game at Hull. We defended well, had some good chances to win it and in the end got a deserved, hard fought point away from home at the league leaders!! On the whole very positive until the ref intervened and robbed us of Forestieri for the next two games!!! Nothing will change there, lets hope the point gained helps us stay in the playoffs rather than the possible dropping points without our best player for two games!! We don't need to see the video again, I think we have all seen it often enough this week!!

OUR TEAM

No Forestieri and maybe no Hutch (not seen anything said about him??) means we will see forced changes to the line-up but the question is who will come in?? I expect the back 4 to revert to the usual FBs in Hunt and Pudil and I also think Lees and Turner will continue at CH. Lee, Bannan and Wallace I think will start in midfield but who will be the front 2 or 3? I think Nuhiu and Hooper will start but without Forestieri can they be effective?? Will we revert to a midfield 4 with Hutch coming in if fit, will McGugan get a start, maybe we go with two wingers with McGeady coming in or can Matias come in and perform in the usual Forestieri role??? A lot of options that CC needs to consider for the next two games!!!!

Westwood

Hunt  Turner Lees  Pudil

Lee  Hutchinson  Bannan

Hooper Matias

Nuhiu

The Bastard in Black is Chris Kavanagh (age 29) from Manchester, Lancashire. Notts County manager, Ricardo Moniz described him as arrogant after he gave Villa a penalty in a LC tie when there was no contact (sound familiar?). He was involved in a mass confrontation with Fulham players last season after a controversial double yellow card incident against Leeds.

This season he has issued 87 yellow cards & one red card (a handball on the line) from 24 matches (13 in SBC).

He has a limited record with Wednesday:

Sept 15 - Newcastle 0-1 OWLS - 4Y (LC)
Nov 14 - OWLS 2-1 Wigan - 5Y

Two matches, two wins so maybe a lucky referee. He has a reputation for allowing a certain amount of rough stuff. All red cards that he has issued in this division have been to foreign players.

Good job FF not playing then.

A foreign player is twice as likely to get a red card as a British player in FL matches. A black player is 50% more likely to get a red card as a white player.

This doesn't mean that foreign players or black players are dirtier or picked on by referees but it is significant.

Over 90% of yellow cards issued for simulation have been given to foreign players.
