Jeff Astle scores Albion's opener in the FA Cup quarter-final decider against Liverpool, 18th April 1968

Apologies for a very makeshift thread this week; I trust Christmas is keeping us all nice and busy, eh? Rolleyes

Our run of awkward fixtures - which, it must be said, Albion have weathered admirably and with a decent points return - come to an end this weekend with a visit to Anfield.  In actual fact, our performances there in recent years (but for one Suarez-inspired mauling a couple of seasons back) have usually been decent, and with Klopp's rejuvenated side losing to Newcastle last week and Sturridge now out to injury, we may stand a better chance of continuing our unbeaten run than previously thought.  Of course, this will mean trying to keep a lid on the quick passing game that Liverpool enjoy; something that has, against other teams, caused us no end of problems.

Rondon's started to come into his own over the last couple of weeks, and just needs that goal to really boost his confidence; he seems to do well playing alongside Lambert, and wouldn't it be sweet if Rickie could exorcise a couple of demons at Anfield?  With the sides below us picking up unlikely points, we still can't afford to get complacent, and a draw here would do us nicely.

We'll win, stay on the edge of our box and nick one from a set piece, McAuley or Lambert.

Not seen TOO much of the resurgent Liverpool but what I HAVE seen suggests to me that their biggest change is the chasing down of the opposition when they haven't got possession.

Whistle Whistle

.....seems to say that we could do something here! As usual we will concede huge amounts of possession and territory but will L'pool be able to get through us with effect?
If we have Sess available, coupled with the speed and opportunistic ability of Saido - yup, I'd play him just behind Rondon - we could catch them on the break, and maybe come home with at least a draw Big Grin

(Love the picture and memory of the great Laurie C at Anfield above. Thumb up Thumb up His like will never be seen again )

....bugger - just read that Sess is out

Step forward Callum McManaman. As much as I rate Sess, this is a great chance for CM gain back his place in the side.

Anything we get from this is a bonus, yet how we've played of late I wouldn't be surprised if we could nick this one.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that picture of Jeff Astle's opener at a very wet Maine Road for the 6th round second replay (I bunked off school to go to it) was the first in a series of three left-foot shots in consecutive rounds, the second being at Villa Park in the semi-final against Birmingham City, and the third that unforgettable winner at Wembley against Everton, which latter prompted Jeff (or someone else) to make some comment about only usually using his left leg to stand on.

You're certainly correct about this goal (as evident from the picture) and the famous cup final one being left-footers.  I think the one against Blues was a left-foot tap-in, too.

Just wondering what the people on here who slated the team after the 0-0 away at Watford are now thinking ?
Said at the time that I was quite impressed with Watford and that they looked good enough to stop up.
7th in the league tonight and Ighalo on fire.
Bournemouth doing a great job too. They were ace last season and that's 2 really good results on the trot. There is going to be some really big teams getting relegated this season and if we stop up (which I still think we will) then the results over performance season will be the envy of many. Including the claret & blue cocky b@stards down the road.
