THE MATCH - SATURDAY 12TH DECEMBER 2015 3PM KO

[Image: 220px-Cardiff_City_Crest_2015.jpg]    v    [Image: 150px-Sheffield_Wednesday.svg.png]

Big game for us this weekend against the team currently in 6th place ahead of us only on goal difference!!  If we make an assumption that neither of us will manage to beat the top 5 very often, but should both beat teams in the bottom half more often than not, then its these games against the teams around us that will ultimately define our season.  We should really go for this one and try to get the win that will put us into the playoffs!!  Of course in previous seasons we would bottle these sort of games but I think we are made of sterner stuff these days and hopefully we can come away with something from this one.

Cardiff are a funny old team!!  Joined the FL in the 1920s, had some success early on, after WW2 spent most of their time in the old 2nd Division and then for most of the 70s, 80s and 90s they were in either the third or fourth tier of English football.  Rose back through the league to eventually have one season in the prem in 2013-14 before dropping back to the Championship.  Last season they struggled to start and never really moved either way out of midtable, eventually finishing 11th.  They did however have on big victory last season, the fans finally managed to force the owners to switch their colors back to their traditional blue from the horrible red they had to endure for a few seasons!!!  Bloody meddling foreign owners!!! Whistle

So all in all they fall into that category of clubs that have had some stardom up in the prem and now consider themselves a decent sized club, when the reality is they are traditionally a smallish 2nd/3rd division club with the odd period of success.  But that is what the prem does to you!!  Having said that our record against them is not pretty reading!!  Overall its ok, W24 L13 D26, but when you look at our record in South Wales its frankly a bit scary - W5 D6 L20. Angry   This has to be one of the worst away days for us according to our previous record, backed up by the fact that we haven't won there since 2007 and have lost the last 5!!!!!  This is a run we have to stop!!  Last season we lost 2-1 there with Sean Morrison scoring for them and for us!!  Here are his goals:

LINKS BETWEEN THE CLUBS

With SG being appointed new HC at Fulham and the fact we will play them twice in a week with him in charge, I thought I would add a new feature that I will try to do each week.  Quite simply its as the title says, players etc that link us and them!!

Current Ex-Owls playing or coaching for them - just one player from what I can see, Kenwyne Jones.  We have been linked with him a few times, but for me he is not the player he was and I think we can do better now.  They also have one of Imre's favorite ex-Owls on their books - a certain goalkeeper called Martin Hodge!!  He played about 200 games for us back in the 80s and is currently their Opposition Analyst!!

From our current team Glenn Loovens played over 100 games for them before his move to Celtic, not aware of any others who have played for them.

Other links include a bunch of managers who have managed both teams - Len Ashurst, Terry Yorath and  Dave Jones. They have also been managed twice in a caretaker role by ex-Owl Jimmy Mullen.

I am sure there are other links between the clubs, if you know of any please feel free to mention!!

THE LAST MATCH

Was getting a point against Derby at home a good result??  Not sure really, we had to contend with some injuries, particularly in defence and made several changes to the team and we were playing one of the supposedly better teams in the division, so in the end a point was probably ok.  The reality is neither team played well, particularly Derby in the first half and the match certainly didn't live up to the hype surrounding it.  Not sure any of us want to watch the video but here it is:

OUR TEAM

Not a ruddy clue at the moment what with injuries and CCs habit of squad rotation. Aside from that I would like the team to look like this:

Westwood

Palmer  Loovens Turner  Pudil

Lee  Hutchinson
Bannan  Forestieri Matias

Joao

WHO'S THE BASTARD IN THE BLACK

Ref - Charles Breakspear
Assts - Adam Hopkins and Andrew Bennett
4th Official - Dean Whitestone

MS will hopefully give us the skinny on this guy in previous Owls games!!

The Bastard in Black is Charles Breakspear from Surrey. He sounds like the poshest referee and coming from Surrey, he probably is. We have never had this clown referee us before so have no bad experiences. He did referee Cardiff at Brighton earlier this season & gave them four yellow cards.

This season, he has refereed 17 matches, issuing 74 yellow cards & no red cards.
