Huddersfield Town welcome Notts County to the John Smith's Stadium on Tuesday night, for the start of another League Cup campaign. Despite dominating the match for huge chunks of the game on Saturday at Hull, Town came away empty handed after losing 2-0.

County meanwhile won their opening day fixture, in League 2 following last season's relegation, 2-0 away at Teddy Sheringham's Stevenage. Curtis Thompson finished a superb counter-attacking goal to give the Magpies the lead before the breakMawouna Amevor sealed the win in the 88th minute, tapping in after Jon Stead's shot was saved.

A brief history of Notts County: Formed on 28 November 1862, Notts County are the oldest football team in the world to currently play at a professional level. They were founder members of the Football League in 1888. They won the FA Cup in 1894, beating Bolton Wanderers. In 1910 they left Trent Bridge, where they had shared with Notts CCC, and moved into their present home, Meadow Lane.
That's about it really, apart from Neil Warnock taking them to Division One (before the formation of the Premier League) in the early 90s, before he came and took over at Leeds Road. Sorry if any County fans read this, but what else is there? Oh, Sam Allardyce won them the 3rd division title in 1998.
One other thing they are famous for is that they donated a set of shirts to an Italian club called Juventus, who went on to be quite a bit more successful than County ever have been.

Head to Head

Town lead in the overall head to head with 15 wins to County's 11, with 7 draws. That's in all competitions. In league matches it's 12 Town wins to 10 County, with 6 draws.

The last meeting of the two clubs was back in 2012 at Meadow Lane when Town threw away a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2. Town's goals coming from Gary Roberts and Jordan Rhodes. The meeting before that one of course, was the famous match where we beat Nottingham Forest's record for the number of unbeaten league matches. Town winning that one 2-1 with another couple from that boy Rhodes.

The most famous match against County was way back in the mists of time, to the start of the era when we dominated the football world. In 1922, we met at Turf Moor, Burnley for the FA Cup semi final. This of course was the year we won the Cup, so it will come as no surprise that we beat Notts that day as well. Goals from Frank MannBilly Smith and Clem Stephenson gave Town a 3-1 win.

So what's new at Notts County?

They are managed these days by Ricardo Moniza former FC Eindhoven player. If you're really interested in who he is, click on his name to go to his Wikipedia page.

They have Town legend Jon Stead amongst their ranks, County becoming his 11th club in the summer after he left Town on a free and rejected a permanent move to Bradford City, where he was on loan last season, famously helping them beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup.
