I've mentioned before that it's been a disappointing season for our development squad, but in contrast to last season where we did well most of the season and finished weakly we've been getting better towards the end of this season. I stand by my hope of finishing 5th as a reasonable placing although we'll probably have to win most or all of our final 4 to do so.

Today we beat celtic's team 1-0 at Lennoxtown to get into that number 5 spot, although Falkirk below us have games in hand. Cal Gallagher scored the only goal as Mbabu completed 90 minutes and Ferguson made his debut, lasting 66.

It's always good to see a few talented boys coming through and there's 1 or 2 more in that current squad who I'm sure could do a job for the first team. Those who've come in recently have shown that we've got players who can make that step up and enhance the squad rather than just make up the numbers. In fact, if our youth players had been better managed it would have been possible for us to field a team now almost entirely of youth products that I think most people would be happy with.

For example:

Kelly;
Sinnamon, Gasparotto, Halkett, White;
McKay, Murdoch, Macleod, Walsh;
Telfer;
Hardie

And that still leaves options in Gallagher, Hutton, Crawford, Aird, a couple of others still in the u20s and maybe some more who left (eg. McAusland),

OK, so maybe reaching a bit with the defence and that's where we've had some from the youths who weren't good enough, but I'd be more than happy to see that side from midfield to front.That's not to say we'd have been able to rely on the young players 3 years ago, but by introducing them gradually and phasing out the big money players we'd have a sustainable squad that should have been competitive at this level. We'd have been in an even better position if guys like Ness and McCabe had stuck about and they'd been used as a basis for the team in 2012. What might have been, eh...

You can have McCabe back if you want!! He is out of contract this summer and will definitely be leaving us on a free!! He looked good in some games but was inconsistent and for some son our managers never picked him even when we had injuries, we also tried to send him out on loan and he refused to go, so for me that suggests maybe some attitude problems.

I wouldn't have him back now, seems like his development has stalled badly. I think you might be right on the attitude problem, as I still maintain any young play in his position should have seen the potential benefits of staying with Rangers in 2012, but instead he and Ness went looking for shortcuts to the big time.

I would like to see young Gasparotto feature at some point next season. I'm sure he got player of the year at Airdrie, and anytime i saw him previously he looked a very decent player.

Must admit Ness was the great white hope for me, when he first broke into the team. The world at his feet, as they say. Then the lights shone a bit too brightly when we were stumbling in darkness, and off he went.

Crippled by injury for years, it's good to see him finally getting some games under his belt at Crewe Alexandria in League 1 - over 30 starts this season for them so far.

Difficult to dismiss the 'What Might Have Been' tag, though.

I thought highly of McCabe too, and see similarities with the playing style of young Murdoch just now. We need to learn from the mistakes of the past, as do the agents of these young players.

Academy teams to meet in Cup Final : Rangers v Celtic

Rangers FC - Glasgow Cup Final 2015

The Glasgow Football Association is pleased to announce that the City of Glasgow Cup Final will take place at Hampden Stadium on Tuesday, 28th April 2015.

U-17 teams from Celtic and Rangers will take part in the Final, which will kick-off at 7pm at the National Stadium.

The Glasgow FA has decided that the match, this year, will be closed doors, although a small number of children from local schools have been invited to attend, through the Football Festival and community programmes of the five clubs. *

We are delighted also to announce that the match will be broadcast on both Club TV Channels.

* Rangers, Celtic, Clyde, Partick Thistle and Queen’s Park.

Its a shame when an U17 Cup final game has to be played behind closed doors due to previous crowd trouble!!

Wee bampots from both sides have been using it as an excuse since we lost the OF league games. Although the fact that it's been largely fans of the other mob who have caused the trouble, ripped up seats etc. appears (surprise, surprise) to have been lost somewhere in the media coverage of it. Whatever the case though, it's a shame for the players on both sides that they can't ever get to just enjoy the occasion in a good atmosphere.

Bloody hell. I think Ally's been using his free time to coach our u-17s. They're terrible tonight, getting the most basic stuff - like not tripping over the ball every time you have it - wrong.

Bloody hell, that's this game over then. Celtic with all of the ball and all of the chances without looking like they could actually score a goal in 900 minutes never mind 90, and then 2 absolute howlers from McCrorie in goal within a few minutes.
