Wouldn't it say a lot about our club if before the game on Tuesday we presented Kevin Davies with a current Chesterfield Shirt printed with his name, the number 150 and the legend FA CUP Semi Finalist?

It would say even more if we gave him a 12 month contract. Still got a game or 2 in him.

Some of ours wouldn't have him in the side, think he will retire at the end of the season

Like Dancing I'd say we'll take him. He can help out with the reserves as well.

I'm sure he did. If we are re-starting our reserve side next season for developmental reasons, someone like Kev on the staff as player and mentor would be a huge help. I saw him play for Chesterfield at 16 and 17, double-marked by tough tackling defenders. It was obvious even as a kid he was our danger man and he took a lot of hammer for it.

When people think of him as a bruiser they haven't seen what he put up with at a point in his career when most of his age group were playing in a very different kind of football, with lads, not the men Kev faced. And when critics question his skill it's a pity they can't be shown the close skills he displayed for us under really tough conditions.

Preston fans should appreciate him while they've got chance. I'd love him to come back to Chesterfield.

Young players we get aren't likely to be full of confidence. Most will have missed out with bigger clubs. The Blades told Kev' he wouldn't make it, he'll know how they feel and provide an example how it's possible to go all the way from Chesterfield to an England cap. Ilkeston is a club re-born on just this kind of youngster. Steve Chettle's bringing more players through down there than most league sides. A Kevin Davies would be pretty inspiring. How about it Kev? Time to come home?

Yes read about Ilkeston in Monday's Telegraph interesting bringing rough diamonds through, not quite what you would expect from mon league club but an interesting experiment

I watched the highlights. Don't think it was a red card and two Preston players fouled Tommy Lee for their 2nd but that's football just got to forget about this game and move onto the next.

I thought Davies was superb ,he was a class above everyone else on the pitch. His cross for Garners header was excellent and he was the first one to react when there was a scramble for their second ,prodding the ball against the bar .He showed excellent touches ,strength and awareness .That's what comes with playing against the best defenders in the world .I wish we had him.

I wonder if Kev realises quite how highly he is regarded in Chesterfield, especially by those of us waving goodbye to middle age. He should come back. Surely he'd like to end his playing career as a hero.

I'd heard about Ilkeston's educational and football combination before the Telegraph article. Though the very idea of education is at odds with my memories of Ilkeston, what the club is doing deserves massive applause.

I've always believed top clubs discard a great deal of talent just because players don't quite fit their mould. Players learn and develop at different rates. Some do lack the capacity to make it as professionals, but many others are simply kicked out to make way for the next batch. Their best hope is for a Chesterfield to pick them up, but they can be reduced to tiers below even Ilkeston in the pyramid, before they get a chance to impress. Certainly non-league is such a fertile scouting ground that you can't help but wonder about the systems that reject them at 16 or 17. Take Tyrone Mings at Ipswich was rejected as too small by Southampton ..... he's now a pretty impressive looking defender. And the favourite story about Kev is he was told he was too fat by the Blades ..........

Come the end of the season, there'll be some real talent discarded. Of course picking out the new Kev Davies isn't easy, but that level of talent will be available. I'm convinced it always is.
