For any Chesterfield fans still breathing - the left back problem is solved, or is it?
An agreement has been reached with Lewis Gordon for the left-back to join the Spireites on a one-year deal, with the option to extend in the club’s favour, following the expiry of his contract at Bristol Rovers.
The 23-year-old played 22 times in League One last season for Rovers.
After agreeing to join the Spireites in a deal which is subject to approval from the relevant authorities, Gordon said: “I’m delighted to be here, it’s a great club to come and be part of.
“The manager has spoken to me and given me confidence; I can’t wait to get going.
“It’s a club on the up. I have no doubts that I can progress here and be part of something special.
“I’m still only young and have lots to learn and I feel this is a place I can do that under a good manager and lots of good coaches.
“I’m looking forward to meeting the fans too – it seems like a fantastic fan base. I can’t wait to get going.”

Attacking full back. Maybe no change in formation with us going to outscore our opponents? Does this mean bye bye Freckleton because I thought he was one for the future and the right age.

The question I can`t help asking myself is whether Lewis Gordon is a better left-back than Bailey Clements. I know precious little about him so can`t provide myself with much of an answer, but with all due respect to him - and to us - a career progression of Arsenal - Brentford - Bristol Rovers - Chesterfield does seem to be heading in slightly the wrong direction. If I`m doing him an injustice there, I apologise to him unreservedly.
I always thought BC did a decent enough job for us when called upon and I was highly impressed by the tone and content of his valedictory message, as reported in the DT. It had a touch of class, I thought. I wish him well and hope he goes on to have a great career that convinces us we made a mistake in letting him go.

I agree re BC. Whenever I saw him play he looked very comfortable on the ball and chipped in with the odd goal or 2.
In some cases I think it's more a case of if you're face doesn't fit.
Maguire was very magnanimous with his leaving speech and always looked good when drafted in. Fans say he couldn't play LB but I beg to differ.
The new guy must have something let's wait and see.

I suspect you`re right about the face not fitting and that the same applies to Loz Maguire and Jeff King as well, both of whom I`d have liked to see us keep.

Bailey Clements looked well capable to me of playing left back in League Two. Loz Maguire last season proved he was well capable of the same by holding down a place in a promotion winning side ..... and I don't even think that it is his best position (left side of a back three or defensive midfield for me!)
My opinion is we are solving a problem we didn't have with Gordon. We already have an attacking left back in Horton. He CAN also defend sometimes, but the problem always seems to be that his mind is not always on that side of the job. As Gordon has steadily descended the pyramid he must also have issues, so have we simply replaced a problem with the same problem?
As for Freckleton, he'd have been my choice for a younger, versatile and quicker centre back. He's 6' 3", shorter than Dancing, but a height I've found ideal.

Chey Dunkley on a 3 year deal !!!!!
Is it just.me or are we going a bit ott with our contracts? The average age of our squad has shot up in the last couple of weeks. In 3 years time we're going to need a lot of walking sticks (says a 71 year old retiree living the life in Spain)

Five years ago I'd have loved Chey Dunkley, but all he is IS a better version of Grimes. And yes we are offering three years to tempt the signature but in two year's time I'm guessing we'll have regretted it. If we go up will he be what we want in League One? And if our answer is no, what do we do with him then and at what cost?
Grimes and Dunkley at the centre of our defence? Looks like fixing a sieve with a very old sledgehammer to me.
We don't seem to be looking much beyond October as regards our future. Hope we are extending the treatment rooms and employing more physios. Perhaps we can attract a sponsor from the Geriatric Care Sector.

Apparently, there`s a rumour going around that we`re thinking of changing our nickname from the Spireites to the Zimmers.

Brilliant idea Salts. We could easily combine the two into our logo. A crooked zimmer would look wonderful.
We might also incorporate those old-people-crossing signs on Sheffield Road and all round the ground .......
A canal-side retirement village might be an attractive developmental project for us to become involved in - much more our style than an academy developing young players to the age of 18 and consigning them all to the scrapheap.
