Top 7 Forecast

We all seem to have varying opinions on who`ll-do-what-to-whom-and-in-what-position over the last couple of months of the season; so who`s up for a game of Top 7 Forecast?

Having made the suggestion, I suppose I`m duty-bound to go first. So here`s what I think ( he says, in his best Jeremy Clarkson voice and with absolutely no confidence whatsoever).

1 Sutton United
2 Chesterfield (okay, I`m biased; so sue me.)
3 Stockport County
4 Hartlepool United
5 Notts County
6 Torquay United
7 Wrexham

These forecasts are based on a set of highly sophisticated and complex algorithms of my own creation and following an in-depth consultation with a friend of mine who assures me that she`s clairvoyant; so what could possibly go wrong?

1 Sutton
2 Hartlepool
3 Chesterfield
4 Wrexham
5 Stockport
6 Halifax
7 Torquay

I think it will be close with only a few points separating the top 7. Sutton will hit a blip but should still finish top. I think Notts County have blown it.

SGB's algorithm has psyched me out, so this is totally sum-free:-

1. Sutton (by the skin of their gander green bills.)
2. Wrexham (fail to win final game of the season and thus blow it.)
3. Hartlepool
4. Notts County
5. Stockport
6. Chesterfield
7. Torquay

The question then is who wins the play-offs? Is this how it goes? Torquay win at Notts County. Stockport beat us via an 89th minute Paddy Madden deflection. Then Torquay win at Wrexham and Hartlepool do for Stockport. So it's revitalised Torquay, with a few more Sunderland imports, against Jeff Stelling. Is that even how it works?

You didn`t believe that algorithm bullshit did you, Dev? If I was as clever as that, I`d be sitting on a yacht somewhere in the Bahamas right now. (I`m not.) There was a smidgeon of a hint of truth in the clairvoyant bit; I could tell you a story about that and may do, one day. Not now, though.

Guesswork; pure guesswork. Nothing more, nothing less.

3. Stockport County 15 pts
4. Wrexham 15 pts
5. Chesterfield 15 pts
6. Hartlepool United 14 pts
7. Dagenham & Redbridge 14 pts

Home Form Table

1. Hartlepool United 33 pts
2. Sutton United 31 pts
3. Wrexham 29 pts
4. Torquay United 27 pts
5. Stockport County 27 pts
6. Notts County 26 pts
7. Eastleigh 26 pts
8. Yeovil Town 26 pts
9. Chesterfield 25 pts

Away Form Table

1. Sutton United 30 pts
2. Torquay United 27 pts
3. Altrincham 26 pts
4. Boreham Wood 25 pts
5. Stockport County 24 pts
6. Hartlepool United 24 pts
7. Halifax Town 22 pts

12. Chesterfield 20 pts

Last 8 games PPG

1. Sutton United 2.25 +0.15
2. Hartlepool United 1.75 -0.03
3. Torquay United 1.25 -0.55
4. Stockport County 1.88 +0.18
5. Wrexham 1.88 +0.21
6. Notts County 1.25 -0.39
7. Chesterfield 1.88 +0.27
8. FC Halifax Town 2.13 +0.61

FC Halifax has the best PPG increase in the league in the last 8 games with an increase of +0.61 and the worst team in the league for PPG in the last 8 games is Torquay United with -0.55.

In all games played so far Chesterfield is averaging 1.61 pts a game but the last 8 games has seen that go up to 1.88.

If we go off form for the last 10 matches Home/Away Chesterfield sit in 3rd with 21 pts W7 D0 L3 GF 10 GA 5 GD+5
If we go off form for the last 12 matches Home/Away Chesterfield still sit in 3rd with 23 pts W7 D2 L3 GF 12 GA 7 GD+5

Going off PPG, I think teams need to be wary of FC Halifax, Chesterfield, Aldershot and Dagenham & Redbridge.

That`s bloody impressive, Matt. Now could you tell us what each team has for breakfast, please?

I don't think SoccerStats are that in depth SGB.

Halifax hasn't got the best PPG in the division in the last 8 games. Sutton has with 2.25. Last 10 games then they were still the best with Halifax back on 1.8; you just told us that Matt, 2.25 beats 2.13.

No SGB I didn't believe in your algorithm. You went to the Grammar School. You'll be an accomplished liar.

If Halifax don't win their next game the top seven could be disappearing into the distance for them. Things change so radically at this time of year. I thought Wrexham would take advantage of Notts County's managerial change today, but they didn't and not only have they gone below us, but their path to catching Sutton (whom I thought would lose but avoided it) looks far steeper.

You are right Dev, I meant the increase. Sutton's PPG has been better than the whole of the division in all the games so far. I suppose though 2.13 beats 2.25 in Trump's World.

Sutton dropped pts against Boreham Wood today but the thing is they won't be that worried as Hartlepool have played 33 games where most teams have played 29/30 games. Notts County have 2 games in hand so they could easily work there way into the Top 3 if they win them and carry on winning games.

Well, they damned well should do, Matt. Not good enough. It`s that sort of inattention to detail that costs managers their jobs.

Good point, Dev. We actually had a double period in Applied Lying every Thursday afternoon in Hurst House. I actually got an A level in Bullshit, funnily enough. Only a Grade B, though; I forgot to make out I was only 13.
