It's a word they made up as the BBC wouldn't allow the word berk. Apparently that's a shortening of the rhyming slang Berkshire Hunt.
The phrase naff off also came about this way.

Funny how back in those days we had a tv series where a black man was called Darkie but the word berk was not allowed!!!!  How times have changed!! Doh
