I think some of the points he makes are valid but I do think these days you have to rotate players when games come thick and fast. The game today is much faster than it used to be and we play a pressing game, particularly in midfield so we are going to see some tired legs every so often. He says keep the same side and then change at half time, well that is not different to what we did except we changed it at half time to become stronger rather than his way round.

We didn't lose that game though because of the changes, we lost it by a few players not concentrating in the first 45 seconds!! Sure we looked much better once FF came on but both CC and FF agreed this was the correct policy. I would have preferred to see Nuhiu on for the first 45 mins and then bring Joao on with FF at HT to put some pace and pressure on their defence.

I remember when Tom MacAnearney managed Scarborough Whistle My old man always said they should do better with three managers. Tom, Mac and Ernie Doh

Anyway Thurny, an half back is what is commonly known as a midfielder nowadays Thumb up for example I used to play left half which is basically central midfield but on the left side of the two. The number 10 position, that people keep harping on about as if it's something new, is what was called inside left or inside right. In days gone by each player would take it in turn to occupy that position but one of them wore number 8 which is not quite as glamorous Whistle

There were also goalkeepers eho always wore green jerseys.  Players wore football boots that were always brown. They replaced the studs on them when they wore out. No substitutes allowed.  Men were men. Football pitches had real grass on them. And we stood on the Kop to watch the game in the pouring rain. Spectators were also men. Any more questions thurny?  Whistle Whistle

I think that CC was correct to rotate but that he wrong to highlight the inequities in rest time - that usually backfires.

I think Boro (away) is our toughest match of the season and they have scored 7 times from the 90th minute onwards as they take advantage of tiring sides. CC gave us the best possible chance by including several fresh players with a view to bringing on players that might grab us a goal in the second half. Apart from conceding in the first minute, that plan worked.

I was against rotation until about ten years ago but the distance covered by the average pro has increased by 15% in the last decade (35% in 30 years) and the number of sprints by 80% in the last ten years. Also medical advancements can predict the likelihood of picking up an injury so a manager knows when best to rest players. This is why so many managers refer to "the red line" as a reason for resting players.

CC was heavily into medical monitoring well before coaches in this country so is a better judge than most managers and certainly Carlton Palmer, who has a history of wanting football to revert to the way it was when he played.
The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.

Boro have only conceded 7 home goals in the calendar year so it was a massive ask. We did ok, applied ourselves superbly in the second half and deserved a point.
