The back tyres are at about 7 mm and the front at 3 mm.

So do you reckon I should just bite the bullet and get two new Pirelli's and just get them to swap the rears to the front ?

Sounds good to me especially for only a month between getting all 4 matched. With new tyres you might want to get the alignment checked too so you know they will wear evenly.

For 1mm difference (new tyres are 8mm) it's hardly worth swapping the new ones to the back. Assuming FWD those on the back will last for ages. Why are you talking about new ones if they still have 7mm? 3mm is the point at which you should be replacing.

How many miles do you get out of tires in the UK?  I get about 50k out of mine over here.

We're lucky to get 15-20K Angry The roads are fuucked, they never get repaired and are full of speed bumps Angry Plus we are probably getting ripped off by the manufacturers foisting off crap at a premium price as with all things British these days Angry

I should put this in the PC too Laugh

That's what I thought, I remember that when I moved here I was amazed how long my tires lasted, the current ones on my car have done 30k and still have a lot of life left in them. The roads here are no better than the UK so I wonder if it's the tire that is made differently.

It depends [TM]

So many things have an influence: fronts/rears/driven/not driven/weight of vehicle. Also on how heavy your right foot is. Different makes and designs have varying wear rates. Pirellis are known to be hard and long wearing; the opposite of their F1 tyres!

I have never really worked out how many miles I get to a set, only doing about 8k a year I don't get through them quickly enough to notice. I've never had to replace a clutch and have only replaced brake pads a few times, so perhaps my driving style is gentle on my cars.

Lets face it Chaz, the car manufacturers could quite easily make an engine that does hundreds of miles to the gallon on fuel made from water (see the latest moon landing projects and read the bit about making rocket fuel from ice and other elements) and tyres that last forever. It's just not in their shareholders, or the governments, interest.

They're as serious about saving the planet and stopping global warming climate change as they are about stopping people smoking Whistle

Sigourney Weaver had it right in one of the Alien films Thumb up "You don't see them fuucking each other over for a Goddamn dollar" Cool
