Hearing Darren McGregor has been released.

Rangers FC - McGregor Leaves Gers Although we now have Tavernier, I am a bit surprised by this news. Darren McGregor has been one of Rangers' stand out players for me from all the games I have been able to see. I hope Tim Sherwood brings him to Villa Park ! ![]() Midfielder on loan from Arsenal until January 2016, when the loan agreement can be reviewed. Rangers FC - Zelalem Joins Gers

Player of the year last season and I have to admit it doesn't quite sit right with me that he's been let go. I'm not sure I've seen Kiernan do anything better than McGregor, and I thought when he was used at right back last year McGregor looked capable of playing the ball to feet very well. I daresay we'll see if Kiernan really is the right man for the job when we come up against Jon Daly at Raith.
I don't know if McGregor would get picked up by a Premier League club Larry, but he should certainly be signed up by a top flight club if he stays in Scotland. Hearts to add another ex-Ger to their ranks?

McGregor hasn't featured at all so far this season for a reason - he's not good enough. Kiernan is younger, quicker and will only get better, and will be a saleable asset in time. McGregor doesn't tick any of those boxes.
Fair dues to him for cutting his losses and looking for first team football though. Let's see if Zaliukas has the same self-respect.

I have made the same post regarding Darren McGregor in the Scottish Football thread on AVF, El Car, then copied it to the AVF Transfers thread under the following : Darren McGregor plays at right back and/or right centre back. He is efficient and effective in his defensive duties and is very good going forward too. I have no idea why Rangers have let him go, but it gives us the chance to get a player who would solve our right-back deficiences. I think Darren McGregor would be more than good enough in the EPL, I cannot agree with Trus that 'he is not good enough'.

Sad to see him go thought he was a decent player quick and a decent passer of the ball. Good luck to him wherever he goes.
Wait, you think McGregor is better than Alan Hutton, Larry?
Really?? Let's not get carried away with the PotY award either. He won that through being one of the very few last season who was anything close to competent, not because he played like Paolo Maldini in his prime.

I was thinking of Bacuna, Trus, not Hutton, when I mentioned AVFC's defensive deficiences at right back. Having Hutton at right back and McGregor and Micah Richards capable of playing right back and/or right centre back as the players for those positions would give AVFC strength in depth there. Bacuna should be played in midfield, he is not a natural defender.
