DC is clearly a smart cookie. He has taken his time in buying the Club. He will have listened to what fans are saying. He will have studied the history of the Club & of the city.
He knows how to push a business forward & make it succeed so he will do this in the context of what he has learned. In a recent survey, less than 2% of Wednesday fans said they wanted a new stadium and only 8% want money spending on the ground. The majority don't care about the condition of the stadium. However, what this doesn't take into account is the potential new fans that we would attract. The biggest way to increase crowds is to move to a new modern stadium. This has more effect than winning matches, although obviously that works pretty well. I think DC will think about a new stadium or a total renovation of the current ground but is mindful of fans views & is taking small steps that will be accepted first until trust is established.
The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.

Economically it makes little sense to build a new stadium rather than redeveloping. It cost Brighton circa £100m to build the amex, the world cup plans were budgeted at circa £40m.
The best way to attract fans (new or old) is to be pushing for promotion to the premier league. Hopefully that will happen next season.

He's never called him prolific, probably more like "the best of a bad bunch". Sorry if I'm wrong Thurnscoe.
Nothing great will ever be achieved without great men, and men are great only if they are determined to be so. For glory gives herself only to those who have always dreamed of her.

To be fair I think you will find that only 8% want to spend money on the ground because when asked we were in a financial position where anything spent on the ground pulled money away from spending on the team!! For the first time possibly in our history (aside from the work done for the 1966 World Cup) we find ourselves in a position where its not an either or situation. Money spent on the stadium now will not prevent money being spent on transfer fees and wages!! Personally I think we can forget the notion of a new stadium, particularly if he is about to spend 1m on a new pitch, to include drainage and better heating. If he were thinking about a new stadium the pitch would be relaid at far less cost than this and little infratructure work would be included. Of course once we get to the prem you never know, but for me Hillsborough is good enough for the prem in terms of capacity and if improvements are made to the fan experience along with necessary maintenance we would be good to go. I do think the World Cup plans Imre refers to are the way to go, but time will tell if that actually happens. |
