O/T Honours System
#1
Just read Becham's just been knighted. What a farce!!!
Let's just cancel the Honours System altogether. It wouldn't be rude to the great people who will actually deserve to be honoured as they will only compare themselves to plonkers like Beckham.

It was only a year or so ago that he was recorded as calling those who doled out the honours as "c***s" for not awarding him a knighthood, as I recall. Angry

The honours system is a good thing, unfortunately like football it is run and decided upon by twots or something spelt very similar. There are some very worthy winners who do great things in the name of Britain and the British people, defend our nation and way of life in wars, bring great success in world sporting competitions, show great leadership in business, bring major innovations to improve health and living standards of humankind. Raise money for charities or do great deeds or acts of self sacrifice for the benefit of their communities. Does Beckham fit any of these categories, possibly but does his attitude match the high standards and modesty of other winners …. No.

Politicians get honours for far less and get more monetary returns from them, peerage with a daily lords attendance allowance whether they stay or not, is Beckham any less deserving, a matter of individual opinion, but more humility would not go amiss.

The worrying thing about Beckham (whom I dislike but for no good reason) is that it's another example of politicians hitching themselves to the coat-tails of celebrities and idolising high profiles. When Andy Murray won Wimbledon, David Cameron said he couldn't think of anyone in the country more deserving of a knighthood. I can - every nurse and every carer, plus many more.
Skewed values.
