Brentford v. Huddersfield Town

Not the worst team snoots. but that statistic is pretty bad. And we do need Bet Lynch back if we're conceding that many goals in his absence. How much are we guna miss robinson though when he goes to QPR? although there's a part of me that says we may be able to buy him off them for a bit less than the million they paid for him now Arry ain't in charge.

Look at our goals conceded column for how good this team is.
it's no good hiding behind the fact Millwall have lost again and that we are safe, that won't sell season tickets next Monday. This squad needs serious investment

Much as Town looked second best again early in the second half, it was the huge deflection on the third goal that killed it. Brentford were better, sure, but not three goals better.
Et in Arcadia Ego.

It's the lack of anything positive to take from the game Snoots. Didn't go tonight but sounds pretty stark fare for the travelling fans....

As oggy said a few weeks ago. It's about playing some attractive stuff to entice the masses back next year!

Really tough game Brentford oozed class, great pace, midfield had time and width that just killed us. We did well to get it back to 1-1 as Smithies made 2 great smother saves early on. Carroll skinned for the 2nd and a scramble down their end unable to see exactly how it fell to their chap who smashed it home. Deflection for No 3 by which time JV lip was dragging on the floor, Scanz had only shown 2 glimpses of of pace after totally absent first half, Bunn was busy great strike to bring us level, Butterfield tried as usual but doesnt have the tools around him ( well there are midfield tools, namely Edgar) but we were a million miles from Brnetford's shape and desire so 4-1 - yeah what I kind of expected with 1 up front and JV on a final warning before HT for a silly push a and crazy situation where the defender stopped and couldnt help plough into him.

We need to find another 2-3 wins couple of draws to find a respectable finish, 500 or so hardy travellers tonight deserve a lot more than 7 goals leaked in 4 days .

Really feel for those that went to Brentford and I know myself that midweek thrashings are no fun (southampton 5-1 Town).

It's time the club woke up and realised what's happening.

After our January sales we left ourselves with a very thin squad of players capable of playing at this level and last night showed it yet again. Jake Carroll coming on at half time, a player not seen in Town colours since Hull City away in the league cup on 24Sept 2013...can you hear that scrapping noise? It's the bottom of the Town barrel. What was his first contribution, getting skinned in the lead up to Brentfords second goal.

Only Town can sell....no sorry give away a left back in the transfer window and leave us with node cent cover and don't buy into this family reasons either, Dean told us on the way to norwich he couldn't wait to get rid of him.

Anyway back to the game or should I say the great Chris Powell post match comments.

"It could've been more" that's right Chris, I listend to the first 10 and it could've been 3 but for Alex Smithies who by 11 minutes was already a dead cert for the Town MOTM

"Players are good enough" clearly they aren't because they are too inconsistent at this level. Just because the likes of Blackpool and Millwall fail every week to catch us up doesn't mean these players are good enough. As I've said before the squad is poorer now than it was in August, too many sales and not enough quality fetched in...no scrap that, Town always wheel out the mantra of 'we will only bring players in who are better than we already have'.  And yet the 2 players we did bring in are bit part players who half the time can't get in the team, although some would say they shouldn't be anywhere near it anyway.

"We look like we may score 3 and concede 4" it's rare I've thought we'll see Town lose 3-4 this season, although he is right just not in the same game. On 10 occasions this season we have conceded 3 or more goals
0-4 Bournemouth
3-1 Cardiff
4-2 Watford (who had 10 men)
3-0 Leeds
3-2 Derby
3-1 Fulham
5-0 Norwich (we did have 10 men)
1-2 Wolves
3-0 Charlton
4-1 Brentford

We shouldn't be getting spanked by a fair few of those teams, especially when we set out to be defensive in some of those games.

on the other hand we have only managed to score 3 or more on 5 occasions
1-3 Wolves
4-2 Blackpool
3-0 Forest
3-1 Watford
1-3 Millwall
A couple of decent results but the other 3 were against very very poor teams.

60goals conceded so far tells the story that this defence isn't good enough, Another summer of signings in Poundland approaches as we attempt to fall lucky on the right players at bargain basement prices...we won't though

I think the difference I noticed between Town and Brentford the most was the range of approaches. I understand that Town were playing as compact at the back as they can, so the options for going forward were always going to be limited, but the few times they were able to mix it up instead of hitting long balls into the channels for Vaughan, Bunn and to a lesser extent Scannell to chase they looked genuinely as if something might come of it - though the speed in players joining those fledgling attacks tend to meant they were snuffed out early, there was potential for something to come that way.

By contrast Brentford attacked (except for the second half of the first half, when they struggled to break Town down) with a range of options - from strikers pulling wide to knock down to wide players, to wingers cutting inside to either work the ball across the pitch or find an overlap, even to little interchanges on the edge of the box that, fortunately, Town were able to deal with, though I reckon they had a decent shout for handball just before half-time when one of those passes caught (I think) Wallace square on the arm, which was well away from his body.

There was, in red and white stripes, a few players who looked like they were thinking ahead of the game - instead of the 'get the ball, then what do I do with it' that Town's players showed, it was as if they planned what was going to happen before they did get the ball - yes, because they're not world beaters it didn't come off every time, but they played some fabulous football at times. I do wonder if there's something that they work on in training; little set plays that can be used in open play. It would make sense to do that on a micromanagement level - if you've had your players running through things time and again on the training pitch, even if they don't quite get the opportunity every game, the fact they've done it a lot will mean they can default to the 'plays' they've learned - a bit like an American Football playbook but not bookended by a stop and start, just an opportunity to action it.

So yes, Town were beaten by the better side. First half, they managed to turn it round and get back into it. Second half, Brentford came out early, warmed up, and toasted Town from the off. Still, before the third goal went in, it was looking to be following a similar patter to the first, but that one really killed the game - not sure Town had a shot after the third goal, to be honest. Unfortunate that they were killed off by a slice of fortune, but if they hadn't been, it would have been delaying the inevitable.

As it was, I had a lovely evening out, so its not the end of the world for me; I wish Brentford well (as ever) and hope that if I do get to go to Griffin Park in future, it isn't as a result of some painful failure on their part.
Et in Arcadia Ego.

Who you talking about Wakey? Peltier or Dixon?
What's the story behind it?

Dixon...no real story other than he said we wouldn't believe how much money he was paying him(he obviously didn't tell us) and the sooner he left the better. Infact I've just double checked my text messages that day and this is one I sent a mate that lunch time.
Danny Ward is at the front of the list to go in January, closely followed by Dixon...source DH

Next thing you know we've come to a mutual agreement to release him and then the club trot out family reasons as the excuse.

Can't say I've ever known any team, nor do I ever expect to, put it out on a press release that they let a player go because they thought they were paying him too much. Much of football and pro sport in general is smoke and mirrors when it comes to wages, fees and anything else financial. Length of contracts seem to be the only thing that ever really comes out in the open.

If Town, Dixon and his agents were in agreement with the family issues thing (wasn't that said to be the reason Hogg joined us from Watford?) then really I couldn't care less. He's left the club, the club's happy, he's got a job back up in Dundee where he's playing more often, so he's probably happy even if on less money. Not really his fault that the club signed another left back on loan that meant he was sat on the bench at whatever daft wages Deano and his men agreed to in the first place and there are some things Deano just shouldn't really be openly discussing with supporters.
