It all comes across as the top brass being a tad miffed, which at the end of the day is their own fault as they should have plans in place for all employees to progress (if the employees want to) no matter whether they are office, ground staff, coaching or playing staff at a football club. Even with that in place you can't hold folk back if someone else makes them an offer that improves their current situation.

I was once told that being miffed came from being served tea where the milk was put in the tea cup/mug first (m i f) as opposed to after. It never is with me as I don't drink tea with milk. The lemon slice/juice makes it curdle.
