Peterborough United have signed New Zealand international Matthew Garbett following his departure from Eredivisie side NAC Breda at the end of last season.

The 23-year-old midfielder has signed a two-year contract, with the option of a further 12 months, at London Road.

"Matt comes with a good pedigree having played at the top level in Holland and I know that is a high level, certainly above League One, for sure," Posh boss Darren Ferguson told the club website., external

Garbett started his career in New Zealand, playing for Western Suburbs in Porirua, a city in the region of Wellington.

After moving to Swedish club Falkenbergs in 2020, Garbett went on to join Serie A club Torino, making his sole appearance for the Italian club in the Coppa Italia, before a two-year spell in the Netherlands with Breda.

Garbett added: "I am really excited about the opportunity.

"This is a big year for me personally with the World Cup next summer, so I want to be playing and contributing, but for now, it is about settling in, getting to know the players and the city and then going from there."

Peterborough have lost both of their opening League One fixtures this season and were knocked out of the Carabao Cup first round by Accrington on Tuesday.

They travel to Wigan on Saturday [15:00 BST] looking for their first points of the campaign.

Peterborough United have signed former Huddersfield Town defender Tom Lees.

The 34-year-old has played 598 league games, mostly at Championship level, during a career which began at Leeds United.

He later moved on to Sheffield Wednesday, where he made 274 appearances in all competitions, and then Huddersfield, but was released at the end of last season.

Lees will provide cover for Sam Hughes, who is out for up to three months after surgery on his Achilles.

"Tom is a really good signing for us," manager Darren Ferguson told the club website., external

"We were looking for an experienced defender, someone who can come in and help the group.

"He has played all of his career at a higher level. He came in and trained with us and was excellent, fitted in straight away and is exactly what we need.

"He can play in a back three or in a four, brings a lot of knowledge and will be a great example to others in terms of the way he trains and plays."

Posh have not disclosed the length of Lees' deal.

Peterborough United have signed Accrington Stanley midfielder Ben Woods for an undisclosed fee on a four-year contract.

Woods, 22, scored 11 goals in 82 appearances for the Lancashire club, his last outing against Gillingham on 2 August, but he is currently recovering from a hand injury.

He began his career in Manchester United's youth system and had a spell in Scotland with Inverness Caledonian Thistle before joining Accrington in the summer of 2023.

"He has been playing at left-wing back for Accrington for whatever reason, but he is a midfield player. He is left-footed, strong, scored seven goals last season so we feel he can add goals and assists," boss Darren Ferguson told the Posh website, external.

"He is a good all-round midfield player, will play anywhere you ask him too. He has a great attitude and I love his mentality, definitely ready for the step-up."

Ferguson added: "At the moment, he has just undergone a small operation on his hand, that is why he has missed a few games including the one against us [in the EFL Cup]. It will keep him out a period of time, around three weeks, which isn't ideal."

Woods said: "I wanted to come to the club anyway, but as soon as I spoke to the manager, that cemented it in seconds. I feel it is the right time to make the move and the right club to make the move to.

"The positive aspect of currently being unavailable is that I can get myself settled, house-wise, get to know the players and the city and then when I am ready, I can focus fully on the football."

Posh have lost all three League One games so far in the new season and are at home to Barnsley on Tuesday evening.

Peterborough United have re-signed defender Peter Kioso on a season-long loan deal from Oxford United.

Kioso spent the first half of the 2023-24 campaign on loan with Posh from then parent club Rotherham United, making 27 appearances and scoring one goal.

He moved to Oxford last summer and played in 33 games in all competitions for the U's, but has returned to Peterborough where he said he has "unfinished business".

"I owe it to the owner, gaffer and fans for the trust they put in me two seasons ago when I needed somewhere to showcase myself," Kioso told the club website, external.

"Posh gave me that chance so it's time to repay that and I will do everything I can to do that. My job is to come in, help the team and I am confident the fortunes will change."

Peterborough United have signed Chelsea striker Jimmy-Jay Morgan along with defender Tom O'Connor and winger Jacob Mendy from Wrexham on loan for the rest of the season.

Morgan has played for England at under-16 through to under-18 level and will be in the Posh squad for Tuesday's EFL Trophy game against Leyton Orient (19:00 BST).

He was on loan at League Two club Gillingham in the second half of last season, scoring twice in 16 games.

O'Connor, 26, has played 112 games for Wrexham since joining them from Burton Albion in January 2022.

Mendy, 28, can also play at wing-back and has won three caps for Gambia.

eterborough United have signed striker Harry Leonard from Blackburn Rovers for an undisclosed fee.

The 21-year-old has scored five goals in 36 appearances for Rovers, although only nine of his 32 in the league have been starts.

He is Posh's fourth signing on Monday's summer transfer deadline day following the arrivals of Jimmy May Morgan, Tom O'Connor and Jacob Mendy.

"I had a couple of options but I thought Peterborough was a perfect fit," Leonard told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

"It's a really big decision (to leave Blackburn) and one I thought long and hard about but one I'm happy I've made."

Leonard's progress at Blackburn was hampered last season by a dislocated shoulder and then a back injury and he believes it will take him "a run of games" to get up to speed.

"I'd love to say I'm 110%, fully sharp. That's only going to come with playing regularly and hopefully I can do that here," he added.
