Attendance: 12,350 (2,557 Wrexham fans).
Referee: Adam Herczerg.
A glimpse into the future and a return to the past, a tale of two halves, we won the first and they won the second, in a way disappointed to lose but saves a midweek away trip to wherever.
A first start for Jebbison and Dobbin, another game for young Carroll, for 45 minutes we were excellent, Divine, Dobbin and Thor ran the game. Should have led after about five minutes, Carroll fired over but we led a minute later, Divine and Dobbin combined with the latter firing home form about 12 yards. Didn't lad for long Hardie spun with the ball and fired home from about 15 yards, great finish. Open game both sides attacked we looked the more dangerous the visitors defence looked vulnerable, but we didn't find a way through until just before half time, corner by Divine, easily headed home by Lindsay unnchallenged from a couple of yards out.
Could have been three Jebbison chipped the keeper but hit the post and from then on we disappeared from the game
Dobbin substituted at half time and we looked a different team, the visitors passed the ball better in the second period, level 10 minutes after the break Ashfield with a possibly deflected shot from outside the box.
Os came on and went off injured five minutes later and with him went our chances.
Plenty of corners to the them, all defended well, in a rare foray upfield Smith fired in a shot well saved by Okonkwo, but as penalties loomed another ball into the box, Walton should have been braver but it did look like a fould by Moore but in it went and out we went.
One final effort at Wrexham's goal Storey's effort following a corner went over the bar.
Disappointed but not overly fussed
HECK
Paul Heckingbottom was left frustrated by his side’s exit from the Carabao Cup.
North End went ahead twice in the 3-2 defeat to Wrexham, but Kieffer Moore’s stoppage-time goal saw PNE knocked out of the competition.
The manager opted to make eight changes from the weekend’s victory over Ipswich Town. Although top goalscorer Milutin Osmajić didn’t start, he came off the bench and had to be withdrawn just ten minutes into his substitute appearance due to a rib injury.
Hecky said: “I'm frustrated because we're out and I'm more concerned about the bodies and the injuries potentially.
“It’s a frustrating night because we've conceded three goals but Jack [Walton] has not had a save to make. It's one of those evenings. I’m frustrated that we're not still in it but, you know what, we've got to make sure it's a blessing now when we recover well and we capitalise on not having that accumulation of games which we got last season.
“We’ll learn, recover now in the next couple of days because from what I've seen of Portsmouth it’s going to be a really tough, frantic game down there.”
Lewis Dobbin got North End going on his first appearance for the club, netting a superb strike just seven minutes in.
He was a real bright spark in the first half, although was withdrawn at half-time in a planned substitution as they look to build up his minutes following the forward’s arrival on loan from Aston Villa.
Asked about his performance, Hecky said: “I’m pleased. We gave him quite a lot of freedom today in a role that he enjoys because he's not been working with us, he's not been part of any of the tactical work we've done in pre-season, so it was a case of setting up to give him the freedom to go and enjoy his game and he can be pleased with his debut, definitely.”
While genuinely disappointed to be out of the competition, the manager and everyone at Deepdale will quickly switch their focus to Saturday’s task of bringing this run of fixtures before the international break to a positive end with a trip to Portsmouth.
Hecky said: “We treat these games differently. We approach the cup games totally different to the league. We want to enjoy it, try to play with freedom, see what we can get, see what nights we can get.
“Like I say, we saw some good stuff here tonight, but now we can't get a Premier League team here or travel to one which we enjoyed last season, so we'll have to wait for the FA Cup for that hopefully.
“It's onto the next thing. I've already been watching Portsmouth this morning before this game. That'll always be the biggest thing for me and the most important thing. I can't hide away from that.
“I do enjoy the cup games. I'm probably one of the few managers who says they want to win them and have good cup runs. I'm disappointed we've not got the opportunity but the more pressing thing for me is Saturday.”
Parky
"I'm very pleased, it's a good night for us. I thought first-half we got back in it quickly after they scored.
"I felt we lost our belief after their (second) goal. Second-half we played with a real belief and I felt we deservedly won the game.
"We had a lot of control with our play and I was very pleased with how we responded from the break to the end."
