Northampton Town have re-signed midfielder Michael Jacobs following his release by Chesterfield.

The 33-year-old began his career with the Cobblers and made 100 appearances for the club in all competitions before moving to Derby County in 2012.

He has agreed a one-year contract, which also includes what the club describe as "various options" and is their fifth summer signing following Jack Perkins, Jack Burroughs, Kamarai Swyer and goalkeeper Ross Fitzsimons.

"We think he can be very good for us, not only in his own right but as a player who the other lads in the squad can learn from and we certainly feel they will benefit from his presence and his experience," said boss Kevin Nolan.

Jacobs has been a member of four promotion-winning teams during his career, three of them from League One - twice with Wigan and once with Wolves.

He made 25 appearances for Chesterfield last term, the final two in their League Two play-off semi-final against Walsall, which they lost 4-1 on aggregate.

Jacobs told BBC Radio Northampton that returning to the side had always been on his "bucket list" and their results were the first he checked on match days after playing for other clubs.

He added: "When I left, I probably didn't want to leave but it was such a great opportunity to go and play for a big club in the Championship."
