WBA vs Southampton - Match Thread

And so begins the week which may define our season.  Before back-to-back matches against Aston Villa which could see us compound their relegation woes and make it to the cup semi-final at their expense (or, nightmarishly, hand them a lifeline and send them to Wembley), we take on high-flying but out-of-form Southampton side knowing that a win will lift us clear of the dogfight and give us the best possible springboard for the double-derby.

I wouldn't blame anyone for having their mind on the games ahead this weekend, but Tony and the boys need to concentrate on this one.  For us, right now, every game counts.

Our special guest this Saturday will be Ronald Koeman's future self, who's travelled back from 2040 to warn us all of the terrible carnage being wreaked by a robotic Sepp Blatter.

For Saints, it's looking like another season where high hopes will be rent asunder against the rocks of Premier League financial "fair play".  They're out-moneyed and increasingly out-gunned by the traditional big boys of the league, and though they may yet take the race for fourth place to the wire (and best of luck to them), the odds aren't looking great.  Koeman's Southampton - in contrast to Pochettino's - are very much built on a base of keeping clean sheets; recently, that hasn't been happening quite so often, and the goals are drying up too.  One goal in their last four matches doesn't paint the rosiest of pictures up front, and you'd hope that our well-drilled defence can keep that run going a little bit longer.

Still, Saints' recent fortunes on the road have been better than those at St Mary's - the familiar pressure of expectation perhaps removed - so there's plenty for Albion to worry about.  That said, we know the Pulis strategy is to target the home games for points, so ideally, another performance like the ones against Swansea and West Ham is what we want.  It was a little concerning last week to see Saido have an off-day after a typical Cattermole clatter, and Ideye regress to being the gentle giant we nearly shipped out; I'm hoping it was a one-off, because we need these boys right on form in the coming matches.

Would I take a draw?  Absolutely.  Would a defeat be the end of the world?  Absolutely not.  Do I want us to rout Southampton so comprehensively that Tim Sherwood rings us up in floods of tears to forfeit the next two matches in advance, before agreeing to relocate Aston Villa to a small farm in Swaziland and legally change his name to "Timid Timmy Trembly Trousers"?  You'd better believe it.

Southampton's goal shyness has to end soon and I hope we're alert to it, otherwise I fear another Spurs scoreline. A win would be massive but atm I don't see it and I'd take a draw now, hoping I'm proved wrong.

Sunderland game has let the doubts creep in again as far as 3 pts is concerned. We just didn't look like scoring did we ? Still, on the plus side we defended really well and reduced Sunderland to very limited chances.
Which Albion will turn up on Saturday ?
1-1 for me and another point in the survival fund.

Interesting this because both The Albion and Villa have a single game before we meet on the Tuesday afterwards.  I think that it will be more telling what Villa get away to Toon when we are at the same time hosting Soton.  The most likely scenario, in my humble opinion, is that we do very well at home because of our resurgent home mentality and Soton’s relatively poor away record coupled with Soton’s realization that their season is effectively over; they won’t be top four and they don’t want the poison chalice that is fifth place so may already be happy to let things slide a bit.  Meanwhile the Geordies have that huge, hyper-critical home fan-base to satisfy having dished up some pretty ropey stuff to them recently.  I think they will emasculate Villa in a display without pity to satisfy their fans lust for a win.  The danger for us is that if Soton are relaxed about the result then they could find a mental zone where they start to enjoy the game and if that happens before we have put at least one goal past them we could struggle.  We need to go flat out to obtain a leading edge early in the game and then try and protect that lead, hopefully a two goal margin.  The game the following Tuesday should see us administer a coup-de-grace to a shell-shocked Villa to then be repeated at a later date.

....this is where Big Vic (no pun intended) steps up to the plate; pulls that shirt on and is a 1 man battering ram against The Saints, scoring a hat trick and handing another 2 to Ideye on a plate.
Saido is then available for the 2 games against Villa but is kept on the bench as BVic finally comes good, AND HOW, finishing the week as our top scorer - us into the semis and Villa anyalated, mentally destroyed and all but relegated in the first week of March. Our goal difference is now positive.

Have you been hitting the whiskey early again drewks? Whistle Smartass

If Berahino can't start/play I would like to see Sessegnon play behind Ideye. I think that Sessegnon is wasted out wide and him playing centrally in a 4-2-3-1 is best for him.
