I didn't mention that defeat against City. It holds bad memories.

It was the last game I went to with my dad for about 20 years. He rang up the night before and asked if I wanted to go. I said yes and he said he'd pick me up about 6.

It got to half 7 and he still hadn't turned up. I didn't drive back then, so I had no other way of getting there. Anyway he turned up about 25 to.

I lived in Gomersal then. Me and Chaffers that is. Anyway, we'd got as far as the Swan traffic lights at Liversedge, it was chucking it down and the match was well into the first half by now, so we decided to go back.

I got home and never intended to go back to Leeds Road again. We'd lost 10-1 to City a few weeks earlier and I really had lost my love for Huddersfield Town. I didn't go to another game that season.

The next season came around and I was told that our Paul wants to go to a football match and I'm taking him to see Huddersfield. We'd been relegated by then, and were now in the 3rd division. So off we went. On the bus, still couldn't drive. Paul would've been 6 then and we kept going and we still go now. All three of us sit together.

As I've mentioned before, I started taking my dad along for a few games before he died.

Another birthday to celebrate today. Gonzalo Ávila Gordón or Pipa as we know him, was born on this date in 1998, making him 24 today.

Ian Ross, who managed Town in 1992 and 93, was born on this date in 1947. He was born in Glasgow, but spent his entire football playing career in England, most notably with Liverpool and Aston Villa. He came to Town as assistant to Eoin Hand and took over when he was sacked. He'd only been in charge a few weeks when we qualified for the 1992 Play Offs, which we lost to little Peterborough United.

Amongst the other clubs he played for was Hereford United in 82/83 and the nearest he got to Scotland in his career was his last job, which was managing Berwick Rangers.

He died in 2019 aged 72.

And yet another victory over Leeds United to report on. This time it was in 1929 in the FA Cup 4th round. We had beaten Chesterfield in the 3rd round 7-1 at Saltergate and now we had a West Riding derby match at Leeds Road. Did we win it? Not half. We stuffed them 3-0. A crowd of 53,700 turned up to see Billy Smith open the scoring with Alex Jackson adding a couple later.

Fast forward a few years to 1957 and another 4th round match at Leeds Road. We had been drawn to play little Peterborough United of the Midland League (they didn't get into the Football League for another 3 years) and it drew another big crowd, with 48,735 turning up at the Home of Football for this one.

The little club had beaten Corby Town, Yeovil Town, Bradford Park Avenue and Lincoln City to get this far. And this far was as far as they would go. We beat them 3-1. The interesting stat in this game though was that Denis Law scored his first FA Cup goal. He would go on to set a record number of goals for this competition over his career, netting 43 times (34 of them for Man U), a record that still stands today.

The other two goals scored in this match were from Dave Hickson and Ron Simpson.

We had the replay of the Stoke FA Cup match that I mentioned we drew 3-3 away the other day. We'd all gathered around the radio the day before to listen to the draw......

Number 15. Stoke City or Huddersfield Town

Will play.......

Number 5. West Bromwich Albion or Ipswich Town

Me and my dad were there on that Tuesday night on this date in 1971, in a crowd of 40,363. I was only ten, very small and couldn't see a blooming thing. We were right in the corner, under the floodlight, next to the open end. Terrible match as well, that ended 0-0 after extra time.

It was the first time I heard somebody shout out; "It's like watching bloody paint dry."  Laugh

The second replay is set for February the 8th at Old Trafford, for the right to host Ipswich Town who have just beaten West Brom 3-0. Before that though, we've got Man Utd at home on Saturday.

Aye Ian Ross was just changing his career direction towards coaching / managerial by the time he got to us. Think he had been at Wolves doing a similar job.

Remember Ross at Villa and was skipper when I used to go in the early 70's.

On a different note, today found me at the City Ground in 1992 for an FA Cup tie v Forest. John Sillett was again our manager but our form was dreadful at the time. It didn't stop 5000+ supporters travelling to watch.

No giant killing on the day with Forest winning 2.0 with goals from Stuart Pearce and Teddy Sheringham. Remember Roy Keane was also playing.

January 27th:

Huddersfield Town of the Premier League faced Championship side Birmingham City in the 4th round of the FA Cup on this day in 2018. We were on a poor run of form, with our only win so far in this month being the 2-1 win at Bolton in the previous round. But it was our brave lads who took the lead in the 21st minute when Steve Mounié headed home from a Flo Hadergjonaj cross. Chris Löwe and Collin Quaner had chances to increase the lead but we went in at the break 1-0 up.

Steve Cotterill, the Blues boss, had his team fired up at half time and they came out and equalised soon after. It was, of course, Lukas Jutkiewicz who scored it. He then had another one in the net, but it was chalked off for offside. David Wagner sent on Joe Lolley and he almost won it in the last minute, but he fluffed it.

So, it's all down to St Andrews on Feb 6th for the replay and the right to host Manchester United in the 5th round.

We were giant killed on this day in 1934. A crowd of 28,423 turned up at Leeds Road to watch Town, who at the time were 3rd in the First Division, play Northampton Town of Division Three South. Town had beaten Plymouth Argyle 6-2 in the previous round and so nobody arrived at the ground that day expecting anything but another massive Town win. What they got was the shock of the round as the Cobblers came away with a 2-0 win.

Squad rotation hadn't been thought of back them and so it was just one change from the team that drew at Bellend Road with Leeds Urinals the previous Saturday. And that one change was the return of first choice left back Reg Mountford for reserve Dick Witham. So a proper shock then.

The most recent game on this day was way back in 2020. The government were still in denial that this thing called Covid 19 was really happening and Town fans were still in denial that another relegation was a reality. More so after this magnificent win at Hull City, a game we won in the 6th minute of added on time.

Before the match, a minute's silence was observed for Jordan Sinnott. Karlan Grant opened the scoring in the first half, with his trademark cutting in from the left wing and whacking it into the net with his right. But then Richard Stearman was adjudged to have had the last touch on a goalmouth scramble as the Tigers equalised.

Town kept pressing and deep into injury time, Elias Kachunga dinked up a lovely cross for super Steve Mounié to head it home and send the travelling fans into ecstasy.

Sadly though, Kamil Grabara was on his way to A&E by the time that went in, after a collision with Christopher Schindler effectively ended his Town career.

The win moved the Terriers up to 19th, above Charlton and Stoke, six points above the drop zone.

Going back a few years more, to the glory days of 2017. And a magnificent 4-0 win at Rochdale in the 4th round of the FA Cup, to back up our 4-0 win against Port Vale in the previous round. This was our biggest away Cup win since that 5-1 win at West Ham I mentioned the other day.

Rochdale started the brightest and should've taken the lead following a bad back pass from Mark Hudson, but it was the mighty Terriers who scored first. David Wagner had just signed a lad on from Union Berlin and he was thrown in up top for this one. And he scored on his debut, the first of many he scored on his way to writing his name in Huddersfield Town legend. He is, of course, Collin Quaner.

Wagz called that goal the tin opener, like we say opening up the floodgates, which it did. He changed formation at half time, bringing on Jonathan Hogg for Harry Bunn and then replacing Elias Kachunga with Michael Hefele and sticking the big lad up front with Quaner.

Izzy Brown scored from the spot to make it 2-0, then the Hef got his first of the day to make it 3-0. And he was sent through on goal by Coll to get his second near the end to send the crowd wild with his Lion Claw celebration.

Next up, Man City at home in the 5th.

Sorry couldn't find a Terriers connection ( even in the Man U. side) ............but this day 30 years ago found me sitting in the main stand at Edgar Street for the one and only time! Tickets were like gold dust for the visit of Alex Ferguson and his star studded Manchester United side in the FA Cup 4th round. Not a great game as we dragged them down to our level, and with 6 minutes to go we were looking at a money spinning replay at Old Trafford.............and then Clayton Blackmore scored the only goal of the game. United went on to win the Cup that year.

It's a happy birthday today to our 2008 Player of the Year, born in 1984, making him 38 today, It's Andy Holdsworth. According to Wikipedia, he is currently the Professional Development Phase manager at Sheffield Wednesday, but will always be remembered here for his goal against Leeds U-shite-d, in 07/08, which gave us our first win against the Beeston Bums for years.

He made 243 (+18 subs) in his Town career, scoring 8 goals.

Born on this date in 1891, was Charlie Slade. He played for Town in what is now called midfield, before during and after the First World War. He was a reservist for the Cavalry Regiment during the war and after he resumed his playing career, he even played a full game as goalkeeper. That was in an away game at Port Vale when Sandy Mutch got injured in the warm up and reserve keeper Edwin Davis hadn't travelled with the squad. He managed to keep a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw.

That was in 1920, our first ever promotion season and he also played for us in the 1920 and 1922 FA Cup Finals.

The Town manager at the time of that first Cup Final was Ambrose Langley and he died on this date in 1937, aged 66.

On this date in 1955, Huddersfield Town played an FA Cup match in front of a massive crowd of 21,908. Doesn't sound all that big, but it was a record crowd, and still is, for Torquay United's Plainmoor stadium. The game was an FA Cup 4th round match and Town won it 1-0 with a goal from Jimmy Glazzard.
