January 19th:

Today marks the birthday of our greatest manager, Herbert Chapman. He was born at Kiveton Park in Rotherham in 1878, one of eleven children, two of the brothers also became professional footballers. His dad was a miner, but Herbert got himself to Sheffield Technical College and studied mining engineering.

His footballing career was no great shakes, taking in minnows like Grimsby Town, Northampton Town and Tottenham Hotspur, who were still in the Southern League then. It was in management that he made his name. Starting out with Northampton, he moved to Leeds City in 1912. He had amassed a decent squad by the time the war broke out and he did his bit for the war effort by becoming a manager at the Barnbow munitions factory in Leeds.

While he was away, Leeds relied heavily on guest players during the wartime league and after the war, it came out that they had been making illegal payments to these players. Typical Leeds! When accusations came, they refused to co-operate and so were banned from the Football League.

Chapman, who had resigned his post immediately after the war and so had nothing to do with any of this, was also banned. But his ban was overturned in 1921 when he was offered a post as assistant to Ambrose Langley at Huddersfield Town. Chapman had been working at a coking plant at Selby and had they not gone bust and he made redundant, he could well have been lost to the game completely.

Selby's loss was Huddersfield's gain and Herbert went on to be the most successful manager in our history, winning the FA Cup and two Football League titles, before being poached by Arsenal and doing the same with them.

But that's just a quick write up of the man. There's so much more to write about, but not now.

Another Town legend from that era, Roy Goodall, died on this day in 1982. He was signed by the aforementioned Ambrose Langley, but blossomed under Chapman. He was a full back and played from 1921 to 1935, ending up in 5th place in our all time appearance chart with 440.

He was captain of England on 13 occasions, gaining a total of 25 caps. He would've been captain at the first World Cup in 1930, had the FA not been a bunch of snobs and turned down the invitation. Doh

Had England won it, Roy would've been more famous than Bobby Moore. Whistle

Anyway, he later managed Mansfield Town and died in Dronsfield aged 79. I was in Dronsfield on Monday. Sheffeld FC play there.

We have a birthday. Paul Reid is 54 today, born in 1968 in Oldbury. He memorably scored twice on his debut in 1994 at Blackpool.

He was last employed by Forest Green in their Academy, according to Wikipedia. No clues as to what he's doing now, but he does occasionally sit in for Matt Glennon on Radio Leeds.

20 Years ago today

Bournemouth 2 v 3 Town
Booth, Hay and Knight scored the goals in front of 5307 which saw Town stay in 9th in Division 2

9 Years ago today

Watford 4 v 0 Town
Deeney, Vydra(2) and Battocchio putting Town to the sword in front of 12522 at Vicarage Road
That defeat meant it was 12 games without a win and Larry(Simon Grayson) was thankfully shown the door.

On this date in 1970, we beat QPR 2-0, with Frank Worthington scoring both, at Leeds Road. The win moved us top of the 2nd Division. We would remain top of the league right till the end of the season. Frank scored 19 goals that season.

We have had two, yes two, Premier League matches on this day. Unfortunately though, we lost them both. In 2018, we lost 2-0 away at Stoke. A poor game in which we only had three shots on target.

In 2019, another defeat. This time it was live on Sky on a Sunday afternoon against Manchester City. It was the first match since David Wagner left the club and we had Mark Hudson in charge. There were rumours flying around that the club had been in contact with somebody called Jan Siewert. Never heard of him.

Neither had Sky Sports and so they went in to interview a bloke in the crowd, who they were sure was him. It wasn't it was a bloke called Martin from WakefieldLaugh

As you can see from the picture, we were already three nil down by this stage, which was the final score. Not bad really, because City had scored 19 goals in their last three matches.

On a much brighter note, back in 1993, we beat Doncaster Rovers 3-0 in the Autoglass Trophy. Gary Barnett, Iain Dunn and a Kieran O'Regan penalty in front of a massive Leeds Road crowd of 1,535.

We also lost 2-0 away at Stoke City 4 years ago today, i remember it well as that was the day Alex Pritchard made his debut for us. It was also the day I told my mates that he wasn't good enough to be a Premier League footballer. I didn't realise at the time that the Championship would also be beyond him.

Matt Crooks is 28 today. Another one of our kids who's gone on and forged a decent career after leaving us. Scored a few this season as well.

He became a bit of a personality in the next few days. He was a guest at the match and was a manager at a children's hospice.
