An old idea, but I thought I'd resurrect it for something to talk about, use as a general space for anything interesting, trivial or just plain daft.

Each day, I will try to post something about Huddersfield Town for that day. It's a challenge I'm setting myself to do, because I'm not into New Years Resolutions, but this is the nearest I'll ever get. And let's see how far I can get without getting bored.

So we start on January the 1st........

1983: Town 6-3 Bradford City

It didn't start well, with City scoring very early on, Cec Podd in the sixth minute getting it. Now Cec was from St Kitts and Nevis, but ended up becoming City's all time appearance holder. In that time from 1970 to 1984 he played 565 times for them and his goal on this day against us was one of only three he ever scored in his entire career.

Not to worry, Town stormed back and Brian Stanton finished the day scoring four of our six goals. His first three were the quickest hat trick ever scored by a Town player, coming in the space of 6 minutes, beating the previous record of George Brown, who took a ridiculously long time of 8 minutes to score his.

Town's other goals came from a Malcolm Brown penalty (given away by a reckless tackle from City's teenage centre back Peter Jackson) and one from Phil Wilson, two minutes from time. Ex Town striker Bobby Campbell got one of the Bantams' others. Trevor Cherry was also in their line up, he was at the time, their player/manager.

So......

Were you there? Over 18,000 people turned out for this, the biggest home crowd of the season. Do you know any tales of Bobby Campbell's legendary drinking sessions? Trevor Cherry......promotion winning Town hero or traitor who left for Leeds?

Also on this day in 2011, we travelled to play Carlisle United at Brunton Park and in front of a crowd of 5,904, came away with a 2-2 draw with goals from Peter Clarke and Scott Arfield. Nothing to highlight on a thread of memories really, but it was the start of that amazing run of 43 matches without defeat, sorry "regular league matches" without defeat.  Blush

Born on the 1st of January in 1891 in Newcastle, was Ted Magner who managed our club for a while during the 2nd world war. He arrived at the club in 1938 as assistant to Clem Stephenson and took over as manager when Clem retired in 1942. After leaving Town, he managed Derby, where he won them the final wartime league title. He had coached the Danish national team before the war and had been appointed as their new coach after the war, but before taking up the job, he got ill and died.

It is also the birthday today of our young centre back, Mustapha Olagunju, who is 20 years old today. He has played one game for the first team, that FA Cup defeat at home to Plymouth Gargoyle last season. I thought he looked impressive, as did the management of Port Vale, who took him on loan for the rest of the season. He spent most of his time on the bench, but did make the starting line up twice. First up was a draw at Leyton Orient in February and then at home to Mansfield in the last game of the season. In between those, he made four appearances from the bench, oddly all of them were in the 89th minute in games that Vale won.

Well what a crap start to the year. Managed a couple of hours sleep after the fecking fireworks but woke up and can't get back to sleep.

So what do we all make of the New Year's Honours?

Nice to see Mandy Taylor get some recognition. Shame she didn't live long enough to get to Buck House to receive it. I hope they let her know in advance that she was getting the award. Looking back at her tweets, she was hoping and praying to make it to New Year's Eve.

She must've known.

But what a stupid system that she had to keep quiet about it, even from her bed in Kirkwood Hospice.

The establishment! How ridiculous!

Pleased also for young Captain Tobias. He becomes the youngest ever recipient of this silly award. Good lad. That's well deserved.

Stood on the Terrace for that one Snoots, but a lot closer to the front than our usual perch on one of the crush barriers. We'd a bunch of once a year supporters with us who were so amazed they turned up for the next game - mostly never to be seen until the next Boxing Day or New Years Day home match.

The honours thing for the most part I don't give a rat's patooey about. For some it seems once they are on the honours wheel of fortune they continue to pick up more with time - for continuing to do the same thing they got their first one for. For others, the £300/day appearance fee for clocking in at the HoL's, going for a subsidised lunch and drinks before clocking out and claiming for a 1st Class train ticket home is the biggest farce of all.

The already rich and famous and quite honestly politicos don't need it, it just massages their ego's. Don't get me started on "The Luvvies" who can't string a sentence together if it's not in a script. Elite athletes and cyclists who apparently need to use an asthmatic inhaler to be able to function properly? Give me a break.

As a reward for genuine people who've done their best to really make a difference in their community - fine, if it's left at that, but it isn't.

Sorry to hijack a Terriers thread but thought I'd add................January 1st 1977, the old Hereford United were playing Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the second division. Chelsea won 5 . 1 despite the experience of Terry Paine for the Bulls. The late John Sillett was the manager at the time although he did quit the following year after another 5 . 1 defeat, this time to Plymouth. He did return to Edgar Street in 1990 for a season after his glory days at Coventry City in the 80's.

How fortunes have changed the 2 sides with Chelsea eventually getting the influx of mega money to transform them into a super power and Hereford United after this high water mark eventually going out of business in 2014.

Happy New Year to all supporters on this site.

Ah, the old fourth division.................around this time we started our financial troubles for the first time!

Frank Lord was our manager who had played for Blackburn and Chesterfield amongst others. Much of his managerial career was abroad, especially South Africa.

Ah yes - we won and scored for you from the half-way line. The Reverend Peter Hart of the Parishes of just outside Walsall (formerly St. Lukes Church Cannock and now St John the Baptist church in Armitage, just outside Rugeley) has never lived it down. Laugh There's also rarely a sermon/wedding ceremony/christening/funeral service when a Town fan doesn't remind him of that goal apparently. We get around a bit.

Nearly froze to death at Hereford February/March 1986 season North End finished next to bottom of the league, game ended 1-1 technically a victory for us that season, lost our sub keeper after 10 minutes broken ankle and centre forward went in goal for the best part of 75 minutes he had also scored our goal. Coach load of us got kicked out of a pub in Wolverhampton think it was something to do with a horn attched to a wall.
