Ska'dforLife's Book: Brummie Road
#1
Has anyone read our own Ska'd's novel yet? Well..........DO!

If you've ever read "Fever Pitch" and liked it, you'll LOVE this. It's not about the Arsenal, or even the Villa, or Dingles - it's about THE ALBION! - and it's in proper Black Country dialect.
I had it for Christmas, started it on Wednesday, and couldn't put it down. I've laughed out loud (and cried out loud) this last few days. Can't recommend it enough! You won't be disappointed. Imperative reading for all Albion fans, and once you've read it tell your friends, and neighbours at The Hawthorns.

Yes, nearly finished it. Just had to have a break from reading due to Christmas and working silly hours. I am struggling with the dialect but it is gripping.

I think Ska'd's book's great. Anyone who's ever read any of Catherine Cookson will know how terrible writing can be when written in local dialect - in Cookson's case, the north-east - but Ska'd's writing is perfectly fine. I'm from the north east, so I know that dialect and accent very well, but I grew up in Wednesbury and West Bromwich, so I know that one too. Cookson mangled her dialogue but Ska'd gets his just right. His book is also a good balance between the Albion and the characters in the story. I'm part way through it and it's a top read in my opinion, and I want the sequel already. Congratulations, Ska'd!

Yow ay wrung theer, Amy. Ah lived in Leeds fer 16 years. They'm a funny lot, but I much prefair yower accent in 'uddersfeeld.

Incidentally a lot of West Yorkshire folk migrated for work to the booming Black Country in the 19th Century, and we can thank them for adding variance to the BC accent (which is totally different to Brummagem, only a few miles away).

Wakey's just up the road, dev. In fact we have a Wakefield postcode. (Y) You were very unlucky to have lived in Leeds, talkSAFT. You appear to have come through it unscathed!

That's funny - I do feel 'scathed'!
(I lived on the Leeds/Bradford border at Rawdon, by the Airport. But I only went down Elland Road when the Albion were playing.)

I have just bought the book on my kindle and the first chapter had me hooked already. In that first couple of chapters I think the author has captured the atmosphere of West Brom in the early 60s very accurately. His portrayal of the Black country dialect is also spot on and not over the top like many authors do when attempting the Blackcountry language. I look forward to reading the rest off it.

One question for the older lads here. The author relates the early days of the Brummie Road choir and refers to a Sammie (and Steve) leading the choir. I do recall looking up the Brummie Rd and seeing this Sammie conducting proceedings atop a crash barrier. Does anyone know who he was?
