31 Aug, 2021 Transfer Window: Championship Rebuild
Danny Welbeck has left Watford on a free transfer. I wonder what the chances are of him walking through the door and signing for a year with an option for a further year if we stay up.

I think he’s scored 40+ goals in 12 years so he’d probably fit in well with our stable of prolific forwards

Would provide good competition for Gibbs in the race for the most time spent on the treatment table.

That said, it wouldn't shock me, desperate times...

The transfer deadline for us is not over yet. We will bring In someone in. Still say Grant but King a good shout. Could be two. Hearing that a couple of weeks ago a fee was agreed with Huddersfield of 12 mill + add ons , then Vile bought Watkins they saw the Price and upped Grant’s price to 18 mill. So you cannot blame us for holding fire if this is true. We need one at least sharpish as we have to get him up to fitness.

IMO it seems to me that our incoming deals were based on raising funds from outgoing deals.

So presumably we were hanging our hat on selling Austin, Zohore, Grosicki (plus maybe Phillips and Hegazi) before the deadline. As no deals have gone through, we didn't have a pot to p*ss in.

Couldn't even afford a loan fee...

I guess we are still hoping to shift a couple of them to the Championship. Which might eventually free up some funds to loan from the same level.

We will then try to save face by saving that whoever we acquire, even if it's a desperation signing like Andre Grey, was our 'top target'.

If any move for Deeney or Grey materialises, which I think it will, it smacks of shear desperation. Deeney can't run anymore and Grey has had 4 season in the Premier League and never got into double figures. He mustered 2 goals in all competitions last year and is renowned for ill discipline. He can't pass or link up either, so don't expect football to be as easy on eye.

I just can't see how we're going to be able to stump up the cash for Grant as those outgoings will raise next to nothing. Unless Huddersfield are desperate to get rid, I just can't see how it will happen. As for Josh King, he will have plenty of suitors, so that's pretty much a none starter for us as we are probably the least appealing choice in the league right now.

Such as embarrassing window after going through all that effort to go up. Honestly never expected this...

It's not all bad
We are solvent
Financially we are secure for 3 years
We are in the PL, mixing it with the best.
We are not running up huge debts.
We have Pereira and Diangana to admire for this season. Robinson swapped for Burke.
If we go down so be it. As long as we improve the squad and show some fighting spirit. We will still be the best club in the Midlands no matter what.
