My first game was at home against QPR in the 68/69 season, more than anything I remember the smells especially the muddy grass and having to spend the entire game on my uncles shoulders as I was to small to see over the little wall that used to be around the pitch. My uncle ribbed me right up until he died as when we got home I kept telling my mom and my auntie that everybody in the world must have been at the game. The things you think and say when you are 8 or 9.

Coming from Bath with no connections to the West Midlands whatsoever, I was on holiday in Devon when I was 16. Met a girl from the outskirts of Dudley and went to visit her later in the year. She took me to the Hawthorns during my stay. The love affair has never falted, with the Albion that is! The holiday romance didn't last long at all. That season Albion finished bottom 72/3. Favourite player is difficult, but Willy Johnston has to be up there.

I've told the story many times before, but my old man (a Saddlers fan) took me to Fellows Park to watch Walsall play Albion in a friendly, in the hope of getting me to support Walsall. It backfired. And I've spent a large part of the decades since wondering why the Saddlers couldn't have organised a friendly against Real Madrid instead.
