West Brom: Alan Irvine cannot be confident of staying as manager

Alan Irvine is not sure if he will remain as West Brom manager after the 3-1 home defeat by Manchester City.
The result leaves the Baggies two points above the relegation zone after a run of two wins in 12 games.
Irvine is favourite to become the first Premier League manager to be sacked.
"The chairman will make a decision as far as that is concerned," he said. "I can't control it. Can I be confident about it? Not necessarily, because I don't know what the thinking is."
Irvine, 56, was named as successor to Pepe Mel in June.
Although he had stints in charge of Preston and Sheffield Wednesday, his appointment was regarded as a surprise, with Baggies fans quick to question his appointment after spending three years as head of Everton's academy.
"All I can do is work as hard as I do and keep on trying to get the right kind of performances and results," Irvine said.
Phil Neville, who was at Everton when Irvine was assistant manager at Goodison Park, told Match of the Day: "I think he has what it takes to be a manager at this level.
"You saw that his team were all working for him. The problem is they're getting punished for individual errors. But they should stick with him. He needs to start winning games though."
West Brom have an away game at Stoke on 28 December, followed by a New Year's Day trip to West Ham, before facing non-league Gateshead at the Hawthorns in the FA Cup on 3 January.

I strongly disagree with Phil Neville - is he being crass or what? Yes Phil, we need to start winning games, like away at QPR. The thing is, if we get relegated and Irvine stays in charge, he's already proved a failure at Championship level and I can't see him getting us promoted again, and most of our better players will want to leave as well. Has Phil Neville thought about that?
Wake up, JP!

He just has to go. JP must see the writing on the wall. Fellow pro's saying nice things about him is ridiculous. They don't have to live with the consequences.

Very good point about his inability at Championship level as well. Hate to think it happens but if it does he could be responsible for a long stay down there.

Act now JP!!!!

What nonsense this man spouts when giving post game interviews.

Quote " We started well".

Alan we conceded two goals in the first 13 minutes FFS.

Quote " We created chances"

Yes but we didn't take them, we could/should have had four goals of our own.

The only believable thing he said was that he " feared for his job" after yet another defeat.

Hope he got that one right.

And as for our £10M man well, he had his back to play when the ball hit him and went into the net off the side of his head. He knew nothing about it.

Not sure what Irvine done wrong yesterday.
I suppose he has to take the flak for our 'wonderful' England prospect, our Portuguese 'saviour' and our £10m Super-sub not being able to HIT A FECKIN BARN DOOR!!!

Happy New Year.

It's true he can't really be blamed for yesterday, Tidy, and defeat against teams like Manchester City won't define our season, but I just think the longer he's in charge, the less likely we are to escape relegation, let alone progress. I could be totally wrong. But I'm not feeling good about it all.

AI is reputed to be a good coach.

A good coach will organise his players and should motivate them to believe in themselves and have full confidence in their team mates..

From the MOD highlights(?) :-
I saw a defence in total disarray with Lescott running around like a headless chicken.

I saw strikers who suddenly can't hit a cow's arse with a banjo.

I saw an England goalkeeper who thought that the ball was a piece of soap.

THANK GOODNESS all of City's strikers were out injured. Doh

Irvine made mistakes yesterday, the main one being starting Morrison as a holding midfielder again but he can't be blamed for players making basic mistakes. He can spend 24 hours a day, 7 days a week coaching and motivating the players but if the players make basic mistakes that 10 year olds don't make on Saturday mornings, then it isn't his fault, it is the fault of the players making the mistakes.
  • Lescott being unable to play a simple 10 yard pass to Morrison is Lescott's fault.

  • Berahino being unable to score 2 great chances is Berahino's fault.

  • Varela missing a golden chance to score is Varela's fault.

  • Morrison bear hugging one of QPR's players last week is Morrison's fault.

  • Foster being unable to catch the ball is Foster's fault. If you want to blame someone other than Foster for his mistake then blame Kiely for it because he is the guy that coaches the goalkeepers.
As for Irvine's post match interview, we did start well. We were moving the ball about nicely before Foster made his mistake which knocked us out of our stride. We also made some great chances which Berahino and Varela wasted.

It's all about opinions, and each one of us will have a slightly different one on the AI question.
Mine is this: he's doing his very best; he's started to integrate the more positive players into the team (as most were calling for) but we're still failing in games we shouldn't fail in. Confidence is obviously dropping and as a result players are more prone to making individual mistakes (happening) and will always play safe rather than be more adventurous (also happening).

I'm dead against negative chanting/abuse towards either AI or the players as this simply makes things worse; maybe he ISN'T up to the job but that's not his fault - he applied and JP appointed him!! It's plain to see that if we don't get a win in the next 3-4 games he'll probably be out of a job; I honestly hope that we CAN get that win and that he stays because IMO there ARE positive signs that things are changing slowly, and with a small helping of confidence IMO these players AND this HC can pull things round.

We as a club are shooting ourselves in the foot though - getting a reputation as a 'hiring & sacking' club does us no favours and makes us a bad bet for any proven HC.

If you get points for starting well and showing a good fight when you're behind, we'd be top of the league
