WBA vs Millwall - Match Thread

Contrary to our hopes, there was no Gayle breezing into Albion's squad on deadline day, but nevertheless it looks to have been one of the most successful transfer windows in Albion's recent history, and Slaven Bilic certainly can't complain that there's a lack of bodies at his disposal. Now it just remains to be seen what he does with them, and whether they're up to the task of firing the Baggies back to the big-time.

That peculiar stroke of (mis)fortune that so often doubles up our fixtures in league and cup has struck again, and so in the coming days we'll be playing Millwall in a double-header, the first match being Saturday's Championship encounter in which we'll look to build on a solid win at the City Ground last week. That performance showed flashes of a more mobile and creative midfield than we've had in years, coupled with some pretty solid defending after the early nerves had settled. The one big question mark was over Zohore up front, and it remains to be seen whether Bilic will keep faith with the Dane, and for how long, because over a full season, keeper errors and goals from wingers will not a promotion make. New boy Charlie Austin is the obvious replacement, but having spent so long on the sidelines, there's no guarantee he'll be ready to be thrown in at the deep end.

There's also no guarantee that the Lions will be a pushover on Saturday, having begun their season with a clean sheet and three points against Preston, on top of soundly beating us in a miserable last encounter down in Bermondsey in the spring. But the cornerstone of a successful campaign will be grinding out results at home in even the toughest of fixtures, and there's no reason why that shouldn't commence this weekend.

On the TV video clip on Midland Today Charlie Austin in Saints colours looked a little overweight.
Maybe due to lack of playing time hopefully and our coaching team will get him into trim.

I have no idea what Slaven is going to do in this match. He has so many choices for his starting 11 now with many wingers to choose from and a new striker.

Considering it’s Thursday today, the new players will only have 1 training session before the match so it won’t surprise if Slaven sticks with the same 11 as last week and includes a couple of the new guys on the bench, mainly the ones signed from English clubs such as Austin and Diangana. Pereira might need time to settle into this country.

I’m going for 2-0 to us.

What do you guys think of this potential line-up?

               Johnstone
Ferguson  Ajayi  Bartley  Gibbs
         Sawyers  Krovinovic
 Diangana   Phillips   Edwards(or Pereira)
                  Austin

It may lack a little steel in CM...  But who needs to tackle when you've got the ball, right? Wink

To be honest I don't think he will change that much from last week
Don't think Austin will start he's been training with the u23's at saint's so fitness may be a issue for a few of these guys ..

Yeah I'm fairly certain it will be the same 11 as last week, maybe a couple of the new lads on the bench, but it will be the cup game in the week when we effectively start bedding them in. It'll be good for them to have a few training sessions with the rest of the team too. Anyway should be a good atmosphere for the first home game of the season and I'm sure Millwall will be tough opponents as they normally are, but I'd hope our team is good enough to win this.

I just hope the players we’ve brought in are good enough to plug the obvious gaps, especially FB, CB and midfield. I’m especially pleased we’ve got Romaine Sawyers back. I’m not convinced about our attack, and Gayle was a glaring opportunity missed, I don’t care what his wage demands were. Strikers like him don’t grow on trees at this level. But Charlie Austin is a predator and I hope he remains injury-free. Ska’d is right about Millwall too, they will be difficult.

This is the aries22man.
Wotcher Baggieman. Austin’s always been a bit on the stocky side, so let’s hope he lays off the Banks’s Laugh

Admittedly they were PICTURES, but in the few I've seen of Charlie A in our colours he looks pretty trim!
Maybe the others shown were a little while ago?
