I find it astonishing and puzzling that England have only ever hosted the World Cup once! Which was 52 years ago!. We have the most watched league in the World and we invented the game and gave it to the World yet we've only ever held the competition once.

Yet there are countries who are not as well known for football but will be hosting it in the near and foreseeable future. Qatar will host it in 2022 and USA will host it alongside Mexico and Canada in 2026. The US will have hosted it twice and Mexico for the 3rd time but the UK gets overlooked. It doesn't make any sense.

The UK already has the stadiums, infrastructure and ease of travel all in place and ready to host the tournament. The UK could have a joint bid with Scotland and Wales and host group games, last 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals with the final being played at Wembley.

FIFA only have to look at how successful the Olympics, Rugby World Cup and Commonwealth games were.

A joint UK bid would be hard to look past. There can't be many country(s) in the world that have better infrastructure/stadiums/passion/organisation than us.
Scotland have 4 stadia that could easily host games. Wales 3. NI/Ireland 2. England at least 6 big stadia and a host of medium ones.
It's all in place....it's all there.
Only FIFA in their corrupt madness would not allow it.

Well that successful Quatari bid for World Cup 2022 enlightened millions of footie fans how corrupt FIFA actually is - too many 'noses in the trough' and the consequent, compromised 'footie season alteration' by lotsa FAs was totally avoidable if common sense had prevailed. I can't recall many WC bids by England down the years TBH. Surely that recent one presented by Lord Coe, David Beckham etc was not the only bid since the mid 60s!?

We had Euro96. That was a huge success. We also hosted one of the best ever Olympics recently.
I don't think the FA want it. Either that or they know there's no point bidding, knowing corruption at the very top will prevent it

Look how popular we are - nil points in Eurovision Song Contest that's us - and we have great trouble sussing out the rules, unlike Russia and Qatar ..... and our administrators don't really cut the mustard within FIFA do they?

Why would the selection make sense? It's 40 degrees in Qatar and breathing in Mexico City might be as big a problem as dodging the bullets.

Tried in 1990, 1998, 2006 and 2018. All got turned down.

We're going to be hosting the final of Euro 2020 as its being hosted by 12 separate different countries.

That Euro 2020 arrangement is a better idea just to spread/share the massive cost amongst various nations. The logistical arrangement will be a tad compromised but it will work OK.

To be fair, the 1998 bid wasn't an outright rejection; England were persuaded to withdraw and bid for Euro 96 instead, having been given a guarantee that they'd get it.

Looking at that initial bid of 1990 it just 'struck me' that there is a considerable gap of 24 years from 1966 but one has to take into consideration the violence that was endemic in England fans for quite a long time and the Heysel disaster of 1985, and the subsequent UEFA ban that followed, were surely also a big factor for the FA not bothering because they prob knew they had no chance of being given any kinda recognition until things 'settled down' considerably but they never did even up to the start of the millenium although Euro '96 was a good tournament but it was not devoid of the fan violence that the FA prayed for in a 'clean tournament' in that respect. It's just a thought to answer the 'why' in this OP.

A guarantee they'd get it ......... Is that supposed to be a good thing?
