Astle turns Cyril Knowles and John Collins as Albion face Spurs at the Hawthorns; 28th March 1970

It's been nine years since Albion were last relegated from the Premier League, and this spring has brought some uncanny similarities to that of 2009. Just as Mowbray's men only started winning matches when it was really too late to make a difference, so our present run of form is probably just a stay of execution; and now, as then, it all comes down to the penultimate game of the season, at home against one of the league's big guns.

In 2009 it was Liverpool who dispatched us 2-0 to place the inevitable letter R beside our name, but this Saturday we welcome Spurs to the Hawthorns, who'll aim to do the same. It may be that results elsewhere do for us instead, but it would be nice if we could take it into the final day, and failing that, if Saturday sees us down, I only hope we can show Big Dave the appreciation he deserves for his efforts in recent weeks, just as it was shown to Mowbray nine years ago.

Today is likely to be the day we sink into Championship oblivion thanks to Pulis

And now the end is near and so we face the final nail in our coffin
It's time to say to TP, thanks for noffin
Regrets, we have two,
TP, AP, it's both of you
As they close our relegation curtain
We'll be back, of that I'm certain
But now, we'll do it OUR WAY .....

I fear today is the day I think we might even manage our historically frequent 1-1 against the spuds but it won’t be enough! We can blame pulis we can blame Pardew but the same players are getting results under BD who’s tactics have also been questioned by some here so I think these players need to take a good look at themselves many of whom will abandon us to continue plying their trade in a league they’ve failed to be successful in and the irony is as we drop into the CS pulis May very well be coming up with middlesborough whom he has rejuvenated. There’s a bigger picture here and whilst pulis looks like the big villain I believe there’s a lot more gone on that many people at wba need to address  I’d be wary of giving BD the job next season as well because atm he’s managing with no pressure whatsoever but that pressure to come back up might be a bridge too far. The owners need to make some very astute and wise decisions but I’m concerned about theirs lack of football experience and savvy. Apart from the past four games this season has been a disgraceful embarsment and only BD and these past 4 games under him has cast any glimmer of light and degree of pride for an entire season and a half now. I remain sceptical

Sadly, yes it is. With their last match against Swansea, and Swansea still to play Southampton, one of the three has to get at least 35 points if Stoke win today.
