WBA vs Arsenal - Match Thread
#61
Never mind trying to get 'bonus' points against Chelsea and Arsenal.
We now have 4 winnable games on the trot coming up. Lose them and there will be no coming back, for us or for AI.
Simple. It's our season defining month coming up so hold onto your hats... Smile

Let's judge our season on the likes of tuesday and sunday. So far we have done ok against those around us, palace and sunderland perhaps should've been wins on another day, burnley and leicester were routs and well fought victories respectively. I don't think we are THAT bad at times. We gave it a good go at the end yesterday but it was too little too late. First shot being on target after 70 mins is not good enough however. Arsenal were always going to punish us with the quality they have, our squad cannot compare to the likes of Sanchez/Cazorla etc, plus they are a huge bogey team for us. We HAVE to beat West Ham now, or at least 4 points from the next two. Lets see what we are made of.

I think Irvine should be given the next 2 matches and him keeping his job after those 2 matches is on conditional grounds.

1) There must be a change in starting personnel and tactics.
2) There must be a change in performance levels.
3) There must be a change in results.

If none of the above are done or the most important one isn't done (the results) then it is game over for Irvine.

Everybody has different opinions on football and we all watch the baggies games and see performances slightly differently,
However when we all seem to agree that Irvines team selection, substitutions and tactics are not effective then I would suggest that we have a big problem !
Really not looking forward to the West Ham game as it's now a huge pressure filled game and it was obvious on Saturday that the fans are starting to be vocal against Irvine with isolated Irvine out chants.
His team selection on Tuesday will be key and this squad who constantly sing his praises must know that unless they perform his job is well and truly on the line....

Tuesday is going to be interesting.

Irvine has been stubborn in his selection so far, but after hearing the fans sign 'you don't know what you're doing', he must know he is on borrowed time. He also knows that if he gets sacked, he'll struggle to get another job again at any level.

He has a dilemma...

A) Pick a much changed, more attacking line up and actually attempt to win a home game and attempt to win back the fans - even though he believes this team will leave us too open.

B) Stay with the same defence minded personnel and face the wrath of the fans if we lose - even though in his mind, this is our best side.

I don't for a minute think that Irvine will wake up on Tuesday suddenly understanding that his team selections and tactics have been beyond inept so far, the guy has already showed that he is completely clueless time and time again in that respect. However, he might wake up and realise that he has to go against his own beliefs that save his job and any future career in management. It will be interesting to see if he straps on a set.

Regardless of what he does, it's going to be a tough game. West Ham look a good side this year and I think we'll struggle whatever he does. However I don't think the fans will settle for us losing with a wimper again (think Everton and Newcastle at home). If that happens with the same lousy personnel, I think he might not make the Villa game.

I just hope that the forced changes he will have to make will make the difference.

Not getting into tit for tat stuff on here. Match is over and done with, we've exhausted all productive discussion and there's bigger things to worry about. Locked.

EDITED TO ADD: If anyone offline over the weekend still wants to share their verdict on this game, feel free to do it on the West Ham match thread combined with your team/tactics for that game Thumb up
