I heard someone on radio talking about the psychology of a football fan. What makes them tick and be so passionate about match day.
He summed it up by saying basically the excitement is about the unknown. Will we win or lose today. While the outcome is in the balance the excitement, thrill and appeal is at its peak. TV, Sky, Money for all the great it has done has taken this edge away in most leagues (relatively) and so a fan can look at a number of fixtures where they know for almost certain they win win or lose.
End result is they are less inclined to go and watch because the thrill and anticipation has gone.
Best example of that is Man City fans. Spoilt by wonderful players and delightful silky skills. But they are crying out for teams to play them and give them a bit of a fight - they want to have some fear that they might lose.
