Huddersfield Town travel to play Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in the third round of the Carabao Cup or just the League Cup if you prefer.

An early chance for the Eagles to get revenge on us after we inflicted their first defeat of the Frank de Boer era, an era that only lasted 77 days. The clean sheet kept that day by Town keeper Jonas Lössl, was a sign of things to come for Palace. They have since failed to score against Liverpool, Swansea, Burnley and most recently, Southampton. That loss on Saturday dinnertime was the first match under the new management of Roy Hodgson and although they once more had plenty of chances to score, it's now 5 games without a goal, an unwanted top flight record. No team before has ever played their first 5 games without scoring. Not just in the recent Premier League, but throughout the history of top flight English football.
The only goals they have scored are in this competition with James McArthur scoring twice against Ipswich Town.

As for Town, it's another opportunity to beat a Palace team in disarray. Though they weren't in disarray the last time we kicked off down there, they soon were as Town totally dominated and scored first half goals though a Ward own goal and a brilliant header by Steve Mounié from a pinpoint Aaron Mooy cross. The big boy from Benin added a third in the second half, but is unlikely to play in this one. He has a heel injury that kept him out on Saturday and there seems little point in rushing him back too soon.
The last round saw us struggle to finish off a determined Rotherham team, who were very unlucky to lose, with goals from a Philip Billing penalty and Joe Lolley. For that game, David Wagner made 10 changes to the starting line up. Expect something similar down at Palace, with possibly a first start for Florent Hadergjonaj and returns to the starting line up for Jonathan Hogg and Martin Crainie, who have both been out injured so far.

A brief history of Crystal Palace: The Crystal Palace was a cast-iron and plate-glass structure originally built in Hyde Park, London, to house the Great Exhibition of 1851. After the exhibition, the whole thing was dismantled and rebuilt in Penge Common, South London. A football stadium was also built there to host the FA Cup Final and eventually in 1905 Crystal Palace FC were formed to play there. They only played there until the first world war and relocated to the current ground at Selhurst Park in 1924.
Three years earlier they had been elected into the Football League and by the time of this relocation they had already been promoted to the 2nd division. However, their first season at Selhurst saw them relegated again. They remained in Division 3 (South) until the League was restructured in 1958 when they became original members of Division 4.
So for a club with such a crap history, how did they become the "big club" their fans consider themselves to be today? Well from that 4th division status in 58, they won promotions all the way to the First Division by the end of the 60s under the management of Dick Graham and then Bert Head, getting there the season before we did.
They were relegated the year after us and like us, they too suffered successive relegations. Unlike us though, they didn't go all the way to the 4th division. Instead, just like at the end of the 60s, by the end of the 70s they were back in division 1. They didn't stay too long, but just like the end of the previous two decades, they were back up again by the end of the 80s.
In 1990 they reached their first FA Cup Final, drawing 3-3 with Manchester United, but then losing the replay 0-1. And they were also in the top flight when the Premier League was founded in 1992. They were relegated in that first season with what is still a Premier League high number of points for a relegated club. They went down despite having clocked up 49 points.
They came straight back up again, but then unluckily came back down again, finishing 4th from bottom as the Premier League was reduced from 22 clubs to 20, thus making their 49 points from the previous relegation sure to stay in the record books for ever, or at least until they put the number back up to 22 clubs.
Palace have since then earned the reputation of being a yo-yo club and have won the Championship play offs on four occasions. Firstly, pre Premier League in 1989, beating Blackburn 4-3 on aggregate. Secondly in 1997 with a last minute winner from David Hopkin to beat Sheffield Utd 1-0. Next up was 2004 and another 1-0 win, this time with a Neil Shipperley goal beating West Ham. And finally, 2013, under the management of our old friend Ian Holloway and another 1-0 win. This time it was Kevin Phillips in injury time against a Watford team that had Jonathan Hogg in it.
They were back at Wembley again in 2016, this time for their 2nd FA Cup Final. It was the same opponents, Man U, and another defeat, 2-1. That was with Alan Pardew in charge. Last season, after a poor start, he was sacked and replaced by former Town centre back and England manager Sam Allardyce, who saved them from relegation, despite looking odds on certainties for much of the season.

Head to Head

The famous win on the opening day of the season saw Town draw level in the overall head to head with 12 wins each and 17 draws.

We have never met each other in the League Cup before, but have played twice in the FA Cup. Town won 5-2 at Leeds Road in 1928/29, with Palace getting their revenge a few years later in 1989/90 by beating us 4-0 at Selhurst Park.

The most recent meeting before this season was in January 2013 when Palace were on their way up to the Premier League. They couldn't win at our place though. Their manager at the time was our old friend Ian Holloway and this 1-0 Town win with a goal from James Vaughan will be best remembered by the country bumpkin lunatic running amok back stage threatening everybody, Ann Hough included, after Alan Lee had gotten away with a nasty elbow challenge on one of the Palace players. I say nasty challenge, he never touched the southern softy.
Also that season, we drew down at Selhurst Park in a televised Friday night game, when a Keith Southern thunderbolt equalised a lucky Wilfred Zaha opener.

That was an isolated season in our meetings. We had a few in the Peter Jackson and Steve Bruce eras in the late 90s and the start of this century. Marcus Stewart, who our old friend Ian Holloway told would be wasting his talent if he signed for Huddersfield Town, particularly enjoyed playing against Palace, scoring 8 times against them, including a hat trick in a 4-0 win and then a couple in the famous 7-1 victory, when Clyde Wijnhard got a hat trick.

And now we are in the Premier League. Big Grin

So what's happening at Selhurst Park?  Managed now by Roy Hodgson, the former England manager. He actually started out in his footballing life in the Crystal Palace youth team and 52 years after leaving and being employed all around the world in various capacities, he's back, replacing the unfortunate Frank de Boer who was sacked after only 4 Premier League games in charge.
Hodgson never played in the Football League, never making the breakthrough at Palace, he drifted into non league football with Tonbridge Angels, Gravesend & Northfleet and then Maidstone Utd where he became assistant manager to Bob Houghton.
At the age of 29 he landed his first managerial role, at Halmstad in Sweden. He spent five years there, winning the league title twice, the first of those he considered to be the greatest achievement of his career.
In 1980 he came back to England to Bristol City, reuniting with Houghton as assistant and then permanent manager, but was fired after only 4 months due to the financial crisis at Ashton Gate.
He went back to Sweden and then Switzerland and had a very successful time there. In 1992 he became the manager of the Swiss national team, taking them to the 1994 World Cup and Euro 96, before which he had agreed to join Inter Milan at the end of the tournament. He had taken Switzerland as high as 3rd in the FIFA rankings.
His time at Inter wasn't very successful though, the highlight being UEFA Cup runners up and in 1997 he was back in England, managing Blackburn Rovers. That wasn't very good either and having achieved a highly rated reputation abroad, Hodgson became a figure of ridicule in the English media for his speech impediment.
After being sacked by Blackburn shortly before they were relegated, Woy, sorry Roy went back to Inter, then back to Switzerland to coach Grasshoppers. In fact the next few years he was just clocking up air miles, going to manage in Denmark, Italy, United Arab Emirates, Norway and Finland before returning to the Premier League with Fulham in 2007. He took them to their highest ever league finish, 7th in 2009. This qualified them for the Europa League, which they reached the final of, losing in extra time 2-1 to Atlético Madrid.
This then led to him being poached by footballing giants Liverpool to replace Rafael Benítez in the hot seat. However, results were poor, including a home defeat to Northampton Town in the League Cup and by January 2011 he was out. Only to be immediately snapped up by West Bromwich Albion.
He had a year and a half in charge of the Baggies before once more opening himself up to the ridicule of the media by accepting an offer to manage the England national team.
Oh dear! Well this job at Palace is his first since England got beat at Euro 2016 by errm, really? Iceland? Oh for goodness sake, Woy!

Notable players in their squad:- Wilfried Zaha, is probably the best known of their squad. Having featured him in the match thread for the Premier League match, I won't do again, mainly because the soft pillock cried off with a knee injury afterwards, claiming our big boys bullied him!

Southern softy!

Who else then? Don't know what the new manager will do for the League Cup. This was their line up for the match v Ipswich in the last round:

1 Julian Speroni - Argentinian keeper, always wears long kekks.
34 Danny Kelly - Was on loan at Town in 2009.
6 Scott Dann - 30 year old centre back, started at Walsall.
2 Joel Ward - Famously scored Huddersfield Town's first ever Premier League goal.
3 Patrick van Aanholt - Dutch left back, started his career at Chelsea.
42 Jason Puncheon - Club captain, was at Wimbledon when they moved to Milton Keynes.
7 Yohan Cabaye - French international, played in Euro 2012 & 2016 and the 2014 World Cup.
18 James McArthur - Scottish international, won the FA Cup with Wigan.
15 Jeffrey Schlupp - Full back or winger, won the Premier League with Leicester.
28 Jason Lokilo - 18 year old, still to make league debut.
25 Sullay Kaikai - Spent last season on loan at Brentford.

Substitutes:
4 Luka Milivojevic - Serbian international midfielder.
5 James Tomkins - ex West Ham defender, played for GB in the 2012 Olympics.
10 Andros Townsend - England international, so bad he was once loaned out to Leeds.
13 Wayne Hennessey - First choice keeper for Palace and Wales.
14 Lee Chung-yong - South Korean international, ex Bolton Wanderers.
17 Christian Benteke - Club record signing at £27m.
24 Timothy Fosu-Mensah - 19 year old defender on loan from Man Utd.

Recent form: Town are 6th in the Premier League with 8 points. Palace are in 20th and rock bottom with zero points.

Crystal Palace 0-3 Town (Ward og, Mounié 2)
Town 1-0 Newcastle Utd (Mooy)
Town 2-1 Rotherham Utd (EFL Cup) (Billing pen, Lolley)
Town 0-0 Southampton
West Ham Utd 2-0 Town
Town 1-1 Leicester City (Depoitre)

Palace 0-3 Huddersfield Town
Liverpool 1-0 Palace
Palace 2-1 Ipswich Town (EFL Cup) (McArthur 2)
Palace 0-2 Swansea City
Burnley 1-0 Palace
Palace 0-1 Southampton

Town's League Cup record: is really poor, considering what a big club we are.  Whistle

Our best season was back in the 1967/68 season, the season I first started watching. We reached the semi finals then, losing to Arsenal over two legs, but I didn't see any of these games, probably because I was only 7 and my dad obviously thought I was too young for night matches.  Sad

Anyway, to get to that stage we beat Wolves at home 1-0, Norwich away 1-0, West Ham at home 2-0, and Fulham 2-1 at home in a replay after a 1-1 draw down at theirs.
In the semi final we went down to Highbury for the first leg and narrowly lost 3-2, with goals from Trevor Cherry and Colin Dobson. Back at Leeds Road for the second leg we drew level on aggregate when Tony Leighton scored early on, but Arsenal scored three times to make it 6-3.

We had a famous win at Bellend Road in 1982/83, which was a 3rd round match. Third division Town had won two legged encounters over Doncaster Rovers and Oxford Utd and then beat the "Champions of Europe", Leeds United 1-0 with a second half goal from David Cowling, which in those days of Town being in their massive shadow, was a thing to celebrate. We lost 1-0 at Arsenal in the next round.

Victory in this match at Palace would take us to round 4 for only the 4th time in our history. The previous times were in the 67/68 and 82/83 seasons already mentioned, and in 1999/2000.

That last one was the year we won down at Chelsea in the 3rd round, a famous win and a famous goal coming from Kenny Irons. Earlier we had beaten Scunthorpe Utd and Notts County, both over two legs. And then we went out in the 4th round, beaten at home by Wimbledon 2-1 after extra time.

Since then our record has been appalling. This century we have only reached the 3rd round twice, until now that is. In 2003/04, our post administration season under the guidance of Peter Jackson, we beat Derby at home and Sunderland away before losing at Reading. And the last time we got this far was 2013/14. Home victories over Bradford City and Charlton Athletic gave us hope of a cup run, only to be dashed by a 1-0 defeat at Hull City.

We have been embarrassed by the likes of Oldham, Rochdale, Mansfield, Notts County and last season, Shrewsbury.

So the only managers to get us to the 4th round of the League Cup are all club legends. Ian Greaves, Mick Buxton and errm *cough cough* Steve Bruce.  Whistle David Wagner is already a legend. Will he be able to get us to the 4th round also?

Anyone got a dodgy link for this game? Can't go tomorrow due to other more important things happening this week so a link would be good. Haven't found any on my usual lists.

It'd be nice to win and progress but let's be honest, the premier league is our man concern and we have our toughest test of the season coming up on Saturday so I'd imagine plenty of changes in this fixture.

Coleman in goal, I believe Green will be cup-tied.

And no, it wasn't deliberate. Big Grin

Even the scoreboard has it spelt wrong. Rolleyes

I think the Examiner have been reading my article. They've just posted something very similar online about our lack of League Cup success.

'kin 'ell Snoots, I'll have to put War and Peace down for a week to read all that. Given that we only played them a short 5 weeks ago, that's one sterling effort M'Lud. Thumb up I don't see any evidence of it being televised anywhere Snoots so a dodgy feed is likely out of the question. Not even sure if Radio L666s will be able to broadcast it on t'interweb.

Lee Probert is the ref for this match. He's the ref who gave us the controversial last minute penalty at home to Preston last season.

The EFL won't be amused. Another load of changes again from Saturday's side. Be a bugger to explain if they don't win. Oh, and Town have made 9 as well. Smile
