West Brom head coach Alan Irvine has told record signing Brown Ideye he must be patient due to the form of Saido Berahino.

Ideye arrived at the Hawthorns in July from Dynamo Kiev but has only made six appearances in all competitions, his last coming in the League Cup defeat to Bournemouth in October.

The striker staked his claim for a starting berth with a goal in a behind-closed-doors match with Leicester City on Wednesday, and he has spoken of his frustration at not getting his chance in Irvine's first team.

However, Irvine has told the striker he must wait for his chance given Berahino's explosive start to the campaign, which has seen him score eight goals in all competitions and earn a call-up to the full England squad.

"He is doing okay but Brown's competition is Saido," Irvine told the Express and Star. "Brown is suffering a little bit because of how well Saido is playing - and I don't think people would be too pleased if I left Saido out to play Brown.

"People talk about the fee for Brown but people have also been talking about what fee Saido would command.

"You're looking for partnerships and people who can play together. I'm not saying they can't play together but they're both of a similar type and they're at their best going in behind people.

"Unless you're going to play quite a direct style, two going in behind isn't very effective."


So It's OK to Play the same useless 3 in Midfield who offer all the same , Average at best, No pace,, No threat, and leave our best players out is it ?

So it seems we will never see our best players in the team together with this spinless, defensive minded Head Coach in charge.

If you put your dislike of Irvine to one side and think about it logically, what he says makes perfect sense. In a 2 man strike partnership, playing 2 similar strikers is hard to make work because they will both want the same sort of service, make the same runs etc which makes things predictable. A 2 man strike partnership should always have 2 different types of strikers such as Anichebe with Berahino.

Also if we were to play Ideye and Berahino together, it would mean having to play a 4-4-2. We showed against Newcastle just how poor we are in a normal 4-4-2. We started with a balanced 4-4-2 which offered little going forward and we finished with an attacking 4-4-2 with Sessegnon and Samaras out wide and we still offered little going forward.

The other variations of the 4-4-2 are 4-3-1-2 and 4-1-3-2 which are both also known as 4-1-2-1-2. The 4-3-1-2 failed in the cup against Bournenmouth because of it's lack of width and struggled against Hull City. The 4-1-3-2 formation will leave us ridiculously open at the back. We would become the English version of Hoffenheim from Germany in that system. We would score lots of goals but we would also concede lots of goals. (Hoffenheim last season scored over 80 goals but also conceded over 80 goals)

We could play Berahino in the hole behind Ideye but it would mean taking Berahino further away from goal. Moving Berahino out wide would also do the same thing. Playing Ideye in the hole would be ridiculous and even though Ideye played outwide for a Dynamo Kyiv in the first 10 weeks of the 2011/2012 season, he would be wasted out there for us.

Everyone needs patience. Berahino's current goalscoring form won't last forever. The goals will eventually stop coming and when that happens, Ideye will then have his chance as our lone striker to show all his doubters what he can do. He showed some of his quality away at Southampton when he came on.

To add to that, although I'm not enamoured of Irvine's recent selections or the dire display against Newcastle, he did show in the wake of the Everton disaster that he was willing to make changes, i.e. bring Lescott in for Olsson, and it worked for us. I'm hoping the bloke's got the sense to see that the furrow he's been ploughing this autumn isn't the way for the long-term, and that we need to go more adventurous at home with the likes of Varela once he's fit.

That'll be the time and context in which to judge him. I hope he doesn't let stubbornness be his downfall.

In an ideal football world there would be no manager or player transfers during the season. Clubs would have to submit lists before the season kicked off and mahage what they have. It will never happen tough. DD

When previously some people were ranting over Irvine, I said give him 10 matches to prove himself, and he did by moving us away from the bottom of the league, and now I say give him another 10 matches and then let's discuss whether he is good or not.

Besides, what other managers would the doubters have put in that they would be happy with ---- my guess is no-one.
