If we are getting five in before the season starts then today is it ....... don't players have to be registered a numbers of hours before being eligible to play in a match. So to play Saturday we need players in and registered by tomorrow lunchtime ish. They also have to fit in a trip to the Austrian mountains, pre season training, learning their teammates names, busy 24 hrs then.

I actually like Joel Ward and I have nothing against signing him. Tony Pulis knows him very well from his Crystal Palace reign where he used him in his natural right back role (8 league games) as well as left back (12 league games) and defensive midfield (6 league games).

If he is to sign (story could be false) I can see him being first choice right back (Dawson second choice) with Nyom becoming first choice left back with Marc Wilson as second choice. That would mean Brunt being back in midfield permanently. It wouldn't be perfect but it would be better than what we have currently.

Yup - can actually imagine that THIS story has legs. Not a particularly glamorous addition but nowt wrong with that IMHO - a proven, versatile performer at this level Thumb up

I'd also be happy if we signed Ward. I'm not Dawson's biggest fan as he doesn't look comfortable on the ball which is not what you want from a full back. Ward would be a great upgrade in that position.

But to be fair to Dawson FB is not his natural position and he could well be the man to help cover at centre back as McAuley must surely not be able to be an ever present this season.

Ward would be an alright signing tbf, given how much he's played in the last few seasons I think it's unlikely Dawson would be dropped, so Ward would play left back or Dawson would move centrally on occasion.

I really don't know what Ward is like so can't really comment. However, if Dawson was to be omitted for him, I'd honestly think that would be a scandalous decision. I appreciate right back is not his preferred position but I think he's done a sterling job in that role and has never let us down badly. Let's be honest, i love Brunty but I'm more concerned at the thought of him at left back for the season than I am at Dawson at right back. However, as others have pointed out, if buying Ward allowed him to move into central defence to partner Evans, I think that would be an excellent development.
