I believe we should treat our friends well. If someone is genuinely doing his best for us, pissing in his ear, belittling his achievements, undermining him, treating him as if he is the enemy are all responses that make us poorer. That's why, before whatever happens this afternoon against the Blades, I want to say that Danny Wilson earned our respect on the field, and off it he has done nothing to deserve the opposite from us. If for once he has failed, or is going to fail, that does not mean we should change our opinion of a good man, who was one of our best-ever players.
That said, if I were Chairman I would use a little of my money in a very simple way if I wanted Chesterfield to avoid relegation. I would set up a bonus fund for every member of staff in which achievements along the path to safety were rewarded. Scorers would individually be rewarded for goals, and the whole team would benefit too, defenders and the team would gain from a clean sheet, assists would be rewarded too. Points won would bring rewards too. But achievements on the field should also percolate throughout the club so that everyone would be committed and discussing avoiding relegation. BUT this would be a fund that paid out only if and when we avoided relegation - it needn't be a lot but if everyone were getting the equivalent of a little holiday, everyone would be on board, drawn together in the fight.
If we are going down, it is as a whole. It is not a manager who has failed if that happens, it is the whole club. There may be bad influences, that we may even need to be rid of, but in the end it is our ability as a club to come together to achieve something which will be our measure. Bolting on a new manager might save us for now, but it would only be a result if, as a whole, we then became a better club.
