WBA Transfer Window - Final Day
I hope there is no truth in the Jay Rodriguez rumour, we can do without injury prone players given our paper thin squad. Not only that, but he's looked a shadow of his former self since he's come back anyway - slow, can barely turn, no goal threat. We play on the break and really need someone dynamic - I see Newcastle are linked with Aboubaker from Porto for less money...

Let's just hope it's a smokescreen.

As for James McCarthy, I wouldn't mind him. Been a regular in a pretty decent Everton side for a few years. Knows the league, great engine, tenacious. Definite improvement on an ageing Fletcher IMO. The right sort of age at 26 too.

Like you, Slick, hugely underwhelmed at the thought of signing Rodriguez - reminds me of a slightly upmarket Steve Claridge

Hey - the mere fact that we have actuallymade an official move for a player has to be applauded. it's so rare!

Personally I have no problems with him. I would welcome him being at the club. Our medical team are fantastic and I am sure the contractual details will take into account potential reoccurances of injuries etc.

It would be great to think we will still be hunting for additional strikers as Rondon and HRK are not enough.

But happy days, this proves our club does have people working this summer.

Not sure if there's been any official approach yet, like other links, I believe this is still unconfirmed paper talk. After all, Southampton don't currently have a coach.

I'm worried this one might be true though, as it keeps cropping up.

While we are desperate for a striker, this money is a massive gamble for someone who has netted 5 Premier League goals in 3 years. I'm almost certain that if this does go through, it will be for an undisclosed fee that is really a lot less than the papers are touting.

I'd rather have Shane Long back instead of Rodriguez

And Shane Long has pace - just what we need up front.

Sounds like another Big Vic - was it really £6 million we paid Everton for him? Doh

I think Jay would be very good if we can keep him fit,
Not sure he is that slow and turns slowly always looked technically good when I have seen him
Can play in various positions and knows where the net is,
In fact his stats stack up favorably from last year compared to our strikers

last season 893 minutes played - 4 goals scored, compares favorably with our lot. ( Goal every 2.5 games)
I would be more concerned about fitness than ability

West Brom appear to have beaten off competition from Newcastle United to sign Rodriguez, who is keen to move to the Midlands club.

West Brom have been attempted to sign Rodriguez for over a year, and the Baggies’ persistence is said to have impressed the attacker.

Southampton have decided that the time is right to allow Rodriguez to leave St. Mary’s, and there are not expected to be any last minute complications in the deal.

Apparently home town club Burnley want Rodriquez back and have entered the race, which could sway him to return to the club where he came through their youth system,

On that basis, we've got a good chance of getting Saido back. Big Grin

I hope so, I just want us to set our sights higher than an under performing and perennially injured second rate striker. I'm sure he was good a few years ago at Burnley but his career since then has been underwhelming. I cannot believe we can't do better than him.
