Half of one single foot "offside". Half of one single foot, which the player gained no advantage from, because he used his chest to control the ball, and was bodily in line with the last man.

Hate to say it because he’s been awesome this season but Johnstone has got to get to that. He dithered again on a cross.

Is there a record for the number of offside goals scored by one player in half a dozen games?

Offside is offside where 3 inches or 3 feet, we would have been screaming from the rafters if it had been given as a goal and our opposition had scored it. I do question though if a linesman can call that and be sure about it.

I do question though if a linesman can call that and be sure about it. I'm sorry, but this doesn't wash with me. From the first codified offside rule in 1863 through to the 2005 clarification about which parts of the body are liable to be considered offside, the purpose of the laws have always concerned the *advantage* an attacker derives from his position. That's the *spirit* of the law; a man who's three feet offside is gaining a clear and obvious advantage over the defender, which he isn't with three inches. But sadly it's not the *letter* of the law, which is why we're in this mess: the men who drafted the rules didn't imagine that computers and laser beams would be used to enforce them to the most absurd degree imaginable, resulting in fewer goals all round. So no, I wouldn't be screaming from the rafters if it went the other way. And I don't think you'd find any example of me ever doing so on here for a marginal call. Screaming at our players to defend the ball into the box better, perhaps, but as for the attacking player? He's positioned himself well (in that his body is in line with the defender's), he's taken the chance, good for him. I don't care where his toes were when the ball was played, because he can't realistically whip out a slide rule and measure them for himself, and it has no bearing on the outcome. Awful, awful use of technology. We played alright, got more bodies in the box and carried a threat throughout...
I did always think we would score, unfortunately we didn't have the quality to put them under sustained pressure. But I think the cold, harsh reality is we still have too many championship players in the team. In Furlong and Phillips you have two players who didn't particularly excel last year and they are starting. Dara and Townsend who did well last year, but were only bit part players. Then there's Pereira who IMO doesn't look up to the pace of the game in this division. I just feel he's a bit overweight and in the Premier League, you can't afford to carry even 3 or 4lbs more than you should. Plus he's got the effort rate of a shoe box. The reality is our summer business has left us dead and buried. I find it astonishing that Furlong in particular has become a Premier League regular. Just goes to show that you can make a living off this game purely from being athletic as the lad has no technical ability whatsoever. To have 2 windows, use all your loans and still have him starting shows how desperately short of quality we were and still are. And with so many passengers, we can play well and still not quite do enough. I think Johnstone should've been dealing with their goal as that cross is deep in his 6 yard box. But I sympathise with him because it did look like Yokuslu was going to head it out. It's hard to be critical of these 2 two though, particularly Yokuslu who has been an absolute breath of fresh air knocking players off the ball, tackling, playing progressive forward passes rather than tippy tappy possession for possession sake stuff. As for our offside goal, what I found strange was that VAR looked at it for a second and there only appeared to be one line on the playback. Every other VAR offside I've seen given has had 2 lines. It did look like he was off to the naked eye, but it was very tight, so I'm not sure how VAR managed to look at it so fast and make the decision without a secondary line. Still, "it's only West Brom" so I doubt that decision will ever be looked at thoroughly to see if it was correct.

We played much better defensively. OK is far more than OK. But we lack striking power and can’t expect much more than a goal a game.
Basically we MUST win 3 more games than both Fulham and Newcastle. Without the -36 goal difference it would have been only two games more to win! It is possible. So there is still a chance. But if we don’t beat Newcastle this weekend I fear they will be too far away and the game is up. |
