Two years ago, on this date in 2020, Town won at home in a Tuesday night match against Bristol City. They were in 7th place in the Championship and we were just outside the relegation area in 21st. On the night though, it looked like the table was upside down as we battered them, but only by a score of 2-1, which slightly flattered the Robins.
On loan from Benfica, Chris Willock scored his first goal for us and his first goal at senior level, with a beautiful curling shot from outside the area, just before half time. It was all one way traffic towards the Bristol goal and we extended the lead when another loan star, Emile Smith Rowe (whatever happened to?) played his way into the box and was taken out by a defender, a tackle like one of the Giants would've been proud of. A definite penalty and lo and behold, the ref gave it. Karlan Grant duly dispatched it.
City got a late equaliser, but the brave Terriers held out for an important victory, with Danny Cowley saying afterwards that it was the first time we'd stamped our identity on a match for the full 90 minutes. We need to keep this going and hope there's no unforeseen disruption to the season coming up.

In 2017, an impressive run of 6 successive league wins came to an end with a draw at Oakwell against Barnsley. The Heffing dream was well and truly on after wins against Ipswich, Brighton and Leeds at home followed by wins on the road at QPR and Rotherham, then a home victory over Reading. And it was looking like another Heffing great win when Michael Hefele scored with a bullet header from a corner in the first half. But Oakwell is a difficult place to go and the Tykes equalised in the second half and we had to settle for the draw.
The result kept us in 3rd, with dirty Leeds moving up to 4th. Could it possibly be an all West Yorkshire Play Off Final? Surely both clubs will make it to the end of season shoot out.

On this day in 2019, Jan Siewert achieved his only win of his time as Huddersfield Town manager. It was a 1-0 win against Woverhampton (can we play you every week) Wanderers, with a goal poked home by a grounded Steve Mounié. Now we all love a last minute winner, so have a look at this, or just skip to the end bit if you'd prefer.
Now then. Fifty years ago. Yes 50 years ago in 1972, was the last time Huddersfield Town reached the last 8 of the FA Cup. That's half a century. We got there by beating Burnley, then Fulham and on this date, West Ham United in a very famous match at Leeds Road. There were a whole host of famous names in the Hammers' team, but our brave lads defied the odds (we were bottom of Div 1 on the way to relegation) to beat the star studded opponents 4-2 with goals from Jimmy Lawson, Terry Dolan, Dave Smith and Frank Worthington.
When the draw was made on the traditional Monday lunchtime, we drew Birmingham City away. They were a 2nd Division team. Surely we'll have a good chance of making the semis. Well that game's coming up on the 18th of March. In the meantime, have another video.
We have another birthday. Born on this day in 2003, he's 19 today, it's Levi Colwill. And hopefully he'll get a game at St Andrews today and score another one to add to his late, late winner at Sheffield United earlier in the season.
Can you believe he's only 19? Plays with a lot of maturity, he does. A lad with a big future in the game. Probably not with us though.

Was at St Andrews for the Birmingham City FA Cup game with a blues mate. One hell of a crowd especially in the old spion kop ( most exhilerating and frightening place I've ever watched football!) and the score ..............wait and see!
Just noticed the Terriers are back at Birmingham today, bet there won't be 50,000+ there today

Dave Mangnall had taken his run of scoring in consecutive matches to 11 when Town lost against West Brom at the Hawthorns on Feb 20th. That run came to an end on this date in 1932 when he failed to score in the FA Cup quarter final match against Arsenal. In total he had scored 19 goals in those 11 matches and he would go on to continue the run of scoring in successive league games, but for now, the run in all competitions was over.
The match itself isn't remembered for his run coming to an end though. It is known for the attendance, a record for Leeds Road of 67,037. And it's said that there were about another 10,000 locked out, who went to watch the match from Dalton Bank. I had relatives there, who told me all about it when I was a kid and an old bloke I used to talk to in the pub a few years later who was there as well. Said he couldn't see a bloody thing.
Anyway, we lost the match against the Arsenal, who of course were managed at the time by Herbert Chapman. He was probably a part of the reason for the huge excitement surrounding the game. He was of course the man who took us on the great championship winning days of the 20s and had beaten us with his Arsenal side in the 1930 Cup Final. So there was a bit of a rivalry there.
The score was 1-0 to the Ars-e-nal, with centre half Herbie Roberts getting the goal, his only goal of the season.
Here's a picture of our wonderful old stadium, filled to the rafters, on this day 90 years ago.

George Cook, who played inside left in our Triple Championship winning seasons in the 20s, was born on this date in Evenwood, County Durham in 1895. He was a late starter to professional football, signing for 2nd Division Rotherham County when he was 27. After one season, he signed for Town in 1923 and by the end of the season, he had won a Football League title. He scored 9 goals in the season, but most importantly, two of those were in the final game, a 3-0 win at Leeds Road against Nottingham Forest, which sealed the title win.
He scored another 9 goals in the next season as we retained the title and followed that with 14 in 25/26 as we became the first team ever to win the League three times in a row. Of those 14 goals, two of them were against Leeds in a 4-0 win at Bellend Road and another two in a 5-0 win at Old Trafford against Man Utd.
But then midway through the next season, he was sold to Aston Villa, with his last Town goal being scored in a 2-0 win over Spurs at Leeds Road.

Another club legend born on this day was Jimmy Nicholson. Born in Belfast in 1943, he's 79 today.
He was of course the skipper of the 1969/70 2nd Division championship winning side and played his part in our subsequent 1st Division seasons. Signed from Man Utd in 1964 by Tom Johnston, he went on to play 310 games for us and scored 28 goals.
Known as the King of Huddersfield, he was also our most capped player, earning 31 caps for Northern Ireland, plus another 10 he got while at Man Utd. The first of those came when he was just 17, playing against Scotland at Hampden Park.

Not a lot to report on for this date. We had the FA Cup 5th round replay against Premier League Wimbledon in 1996, but we lost it. They were homeless, playing at Selhurst Park and just a few years away from moving to Milton Keynes to become the MK Dons.
Wimbledon won this one 3-1 with Andy Booth getting our goal.
We had another replay in the last 16 round on this date in 1923. After drawing 1-1 at Leeds Road with Bolton Wanderers, our brave lads travelled to Burnden Park on the following Wednesday. We had won the Cup in the previous season and a massive crowd of 61,609 turned out to watch this.
The Trotters won it 1-0 and went on to win the Cup in the first Final to be played at the new Wembley Stadium against West Ham, the famous one with the white horse.
Not from this match, but here's a picture of Burnden Park from that era.

Now then. When Town beat Birmingham City on Saturday, we set a new club record for games unbeaten in the 2nd tier. That win was the 15th league game without defeat, beating the 14 from 1919/20. Now that run only came to an end because the season ended and we got promoted and so didn't play again at this level until 1952/53. In that season we went unbeaten for the first ten games, so the actual record of unbeaten league games at the 2nd tier level is 24. So Carlos Corberán and his boys still have some work to do.
Anyway, as I was saying. That run started on this date in 1920 with a win at Molineux against the Wolverhampton Wanderers. It was a 3-2 victory with goals from Frank Mann, Billy Smith and George Richardson.
Here's another old ground. Molineux in the 1920s.

Now this only comes around every four years. Unlucky if you had a birthday on February 29, like my Nan did.
So obviously not many games on this particular date. Only 4, so I might as well do them all.
The first one was in 1936. It was a home game against Blackburn Rovers, we were 2nd in Division One, but the attendance was only 3,886. It wasn't a midweek match. It was a Saturday afternoon. I wonder why the crowd was so low.
Anyway, if you know the answer, please let us know. The match itself was a 1-1 draw with Frank Chivers getting our goal.
Next up was a 2-1 home win against Cardiff City in 1964. Goals from a Len White penalty and Derek Stokes.
The third one was a 0-1 defeat at Boothferry Park against Hull City in 1992.
And then finally, 2020. The last home game before the Coronavirus lockdown. It was a magnificent 4-0 home win against Charlton Athletic. Two goals from Karlan Grant, one from Steve Mounie and one from Juninho Bacuna moved us up to 17th in the Championship table, giving us high hopes of avoiding a second relegation in two years.

On this date in 2017, I'm sure we all remember, we played the replay of the FA Cup 5th round match against Man City at the Etihad. And for half an hour we were living the dream. A Harry Bunn strike had put us into the lead after 7 minutes, but then City started using their Premier League cheating skills and lo and behold, we were 5-1 down in no time at all.
And so we missed another chance to make it through to the last 8 of the Cup. It's now 50 years since we did it. Not long now until we get the chance to end that stat.

Back in the 20s and 30s, we had no bother getting through to the latter stages of the FA Cup and on this date in 1930, we had a quarter final match at Villa Park against Aston Villa. Did we win it? Of course we did. Billy Smith scored and Alex Jackson kept up his record of scoring in every round of the competition, as the mighty blue n whites won 2-1.
It's a trip to Old Trafford coming up next for the semi final. The opponent? Sheffield Wednesday on the 22nd of March. Bring it on......
Here's a picture of Villa Park in the 30s.

That's it for FA Cup games on this date, but there was another knockout match, which although against not so glamorous opposition as Aston Villa or Manchester City, it was nonetheless a great victory.
It was in the Autoglass Trophy in 1994 and was played at Edgeley Park against Stockport County. They were one of the top sides in the 3rd Division at the time and had a 6' 7" striker called Kevin Francis who had been a particularly tricky opponent and was instrumental in our 3-0 defeat at the same ground a fortnight earlier. Not sure, but I think he got all three.
Anyway, we won this one 1-0 with a goal from Iain Dunn after a mad scramble in the area if I remember correctly. This turned out to be a bit of a turning point in the season and we had now made it to the area final, just two games away from Wembley. The first leg of that final is in a week's time at Leeds Road against Carlisle United. Bring it on.......

After wins against Chesterfield, Leeds United and Crystal Palace, Town travelled to the Hawthorns on this date in 1929 to take on West Bromwich Albion in the quarter finals of the FA Cup. the Baggies had beaten our West Riding neighbours, Bradford Park Avenue in the last round and so excitement must've been high as the mighty Town came to town. So much so that 52,333 spectators turned up for this one.
The Baggies were in the 2nd Division back then and the visit of our brave lads would've had them down as underdogs and so getting a 1-1 draw was a good result for them. George Brown scored for Town and the replay is set for the 6th of March, back at Leeds Road.

Just the 3 games attended on this date for me, it's not a lucky day as you will see
2013
Brighton & Hove Albion 4 v 1 Town
Ulloa putting Albion in front on 20 minutes
Vaughan equalizing on 42 minutes
And then comes the second half collapse
Ulloa on 76 and 78 minutes to complete his hat trick
Lopez rounding off the scoring with a penalty in the 81st minute
Att 25,831
Going back a little further
2010
Southampton 5 v 0 Town
This game finally got played at the third time of asking having previously been postponed twice, once for weather(who builds a new ground without installing heating under the pitch), the other reason I can't remember
Anyway tonked 5-0, goaded by kids taking the piss after the game and awoken by noisy Seagulls marching up and down on our hotel roof the morning after. Safe to say this wasn't one of my more enjoyable away trips
Lambert, Barnard and Puncheon giving Saints a 3-0 half time lead with Hammond and Waigo adding another two in the second half
This game is noteworthy for Alex oxlaide-chaimberlain making his football league debut
Att 19,821
Finally going even further back in Jodi Whittaker's Tardist we arrive in 1996
Derby County 3 v 2 Town
My only ever visit to the Baseball Ground.
Andy Booth and Ben Thornley on the score sheet for Town,
Paul Simpson with 2 for Derby and some called Robin van der Laan for Derby
This defeat saw Town drop to 5th in the First Division whilst Derby remained top of the League

We went to that Southampton game. A long drive down on a Wednesday afternoon and an even longer drive back.
