I don't think he is missing the point: nobody, not even the small band of people who post on here, gives a flying fuq about what we post. Spiers, however, has a very wide audience and newspapers and their content do shape opinions - they also reinforce wrongly held views. Spiers knew the score and tried to push the boundaries but he got called out - if he was as big a man as he claims to be; if he truly believed in what he was publishing; if he "knew" it to be the truth, then he could have refused to put his name to the apology and simply repeated his claims in something as simple as an online blog.
The sullied characters could then have tested his credentials before the law and let justice prevail - he didn't. He was willing to risk the wealth and livelyhood of others but not his own. What a prick.

I don't see why an award-winning journalist who happens to be right at the top of the rangers fans world record length "List of Enemies" would for some reason decide to stir up a hornets nest by writing about a fictional interaction with a rangers director. Nor can i see why the herald let it through if it was an issue. Iit would have been forgotten about months ago but for imbeciles like chris graham.
The issue here can't be the"billy boys song" and appreciation of it from those at ibrox, because its been belted out by thousands on several occasions of late. And in the past no sanction has ever been applied in scotland. Yet no one wants to admit to singing it,liking it or that "its a great song" or tapping their foot to it... It must be piped off some battered auld TDK-90 from the 80s.
No, the reason speirs went too far was by suggesting the board were not doing anything to challenge sectarianism,so a wee bit of financial pressure was applied to an ailing business and hey presto. Much cheaper and less difficult than legal action.
Oh and from memory spiers did dismiss the heralds apology, and the paper admitted that its apology had been undermined. He clearly endorsed his article "online".

Rangers played no part in this, nor did their fans or Douglas Park. No pressure - financial or otherwise - was applied, the Herald realised the mistake in allowing Spiers' article to be published, apparently unchecked by an editor, and issued a retraction and apology to avoid the possibility of a legal challenge they knew they could not possibly win.
Spiers' comments that doubted the desire of the whole Rangers board to tackle sectarianism, based on an alleged, unprovable, brief comment by one single board member are undoubtedly the reason for the retraction. It's a dreadfully crass and ill-advised opinion to present.
As for the song? Whoever that alleged board member was, he was bang on (allegedly). It's a f*cking brilliant song, it just needs to be modernised lyrically. The sooner that happens and we can all get back to intimidating the f*ck out of opponents by singing it, the better.

A song can have a great tune, but outdated lyrics, Fred.
The most well known example of this is the Russian National Anthem.
The tune we hear now is the same as in Soviet times, but the lyrics have been re-written to get rid of the glowing references the old lyrics had to Stalin.
Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater !

Explain how I'm a bigot?
It's idiots like you (and Spiers) that fuel the sectarianism in Scottish football. Stop it and grow up.

There are many brilliant things about the song. The few that aren't need changed.
Until you can discern the many different levels of brilliance in a piece of work, your views are irrelevant and meaningless.
I think Sweet Home Alabama is a brilliant song, but I don't agree with the lyrics. Does that mean I come from the southern states of America?
