This is the thing: it clearly wasn't about the money for him, it was about the ego. Getting to hold court. Getting to play Billy Big Balls. And while it may not be the most egregious example of this ever happening in football, part of the problem is that a blind eye has been turned to this kind of stuff for far too long.
There are people who give their own time freely to coach kids at grassroots level through genuine love of the game who are asking themselves this week why they even bother. And they're right to. If all that's to be found at the very top of the game is greed, ego and self-interest, then what's the point?
