The playoffs should have nothing to do with the teams in the league above, they are about promotion not relegation. So many things that just don't work in Scotland seem to stem from the fact the top division has only 12 teams, it needs extending.
It was all about Premiership self-interest when the play-off system was set up SCO and the emerging final quali team will generally be knackered by the time they play the 2nd bottom Premiership side. Rangers were a good example of that disadvantage at the end of last season. They were in Hibs current position in having to play 6 x play-off matches and were eventually well stuffed by Motherwell FC. Later on, well after the event, their manager, Stuart McCall, confirmed that his players were run down by the number of competitive matches in a faily short period and no wonder!
Also agreed the Scottish Premiership should be extended/restructured. That's part of the prob and there are too many repetitive fixtures that become extremely boring!!! Been highlighted often enough in fans' surveys. Any club from the Championship that had something significant to offer the top league, in terms of size and standard of football, should've been moved into a restructured format and be done with it in order to enhance the quality of the revamped league as far as can be achieved. A league restructuring exercise may still happen at the official end of the season. At the moment nobody is saying anything because of ongoing play-off matches etc but that possibility is still there!
