I don't think he is missing the point: nobody, not even the small band of people who post on here, gives a flying fuq about what we post. Spiers, however, has a very wide audience and newspapers and their content do shape opinions - they also reinforce wrongly held views. Spiers knew the score and tried to push the boundaries but he got called out - if he was as big a man as he claims to be; if he truly believed in what he was publishing; if he "knew" it to be the truth, then he could have refused to put his name to the apology and simply repeated his claims in something as simple as an online blog.
The sullied characters could then have tested his credentials before the law and let justice prevail - he didn't. He was willing to risk the wealth and livelyhood of others but not his own. What a prick.
