I'm not sure they ever "wanted" to be the only Scottish teams in it but were probably put forward as definites for it to be a success. I am sure that a league of say 20-24 teams would potentially include a couple of others as well.
Only in Scotland is the size of a club determined by the ego of the fans: two of the teams in Europe with biggest fan bases invited to cross border league surprise surprise.
