A lot has been made about our performance against Villa (amongst many other dismal, uninspiring ones), and I feel that this game was the straw that broke the camel’s back with regard to the fans tolerance of Tony Pulis., …and Jeremy Peace to some extent. So, I thought id share a different point of view, and try and look at it from Peace’s ‘business like’ perspective. I would welcome your thoughts.
Starting with last season under Irvine. The idea of his appointment was as strange as it was wonderful. Totally unqualified for the job on one hand, but fitted in well with Albion European model of a head coach and separate player recruitment team etc, and after the appointment of Steve Clark (who had relative success), Peace was prepared to take a gamble on this.
Peace quickly realised the gamble wouldn’t work, and therefore sought an experienced manager to secure our safety. Tony Pulis, was this man, and I believe he was absolutely the right choice, and indeed proved so – few can argue about what he achieved last season….But now that’s history.
Moving on into this season, what is the objective? The main objective like every season is to stay up. But unlike other seasons gone by, the reward for doing so is so, so, SO much bigger than before due to the new TV deal coming into place at the start of next season. Because of this Peace will feel satisfied that Pulis is the man to achieve this (look at his record!).
Now, whilst we are all passionate about the Albion, surely we realise that a football clubs priorities are no longer geared towards the fans. Football is a business, and this is Peace’s game. The business plan this year is to stay up at all costs, and this is Pulis’ brief. Because of this, Pulis is doing it in the only way he knows how. This is his football, we all know that. His football last year was a necessity, and in both his and Peace’s mind, it is arguably the same this season. Because for Tony Pulis to keep a team in the league, he will play the only football he knows that will achieve this (utter sh*te), therefore meeting the requirement of the business plan and securing the short and long term financial future of the club.
Now Peace is an Albion fan himself but for this season alone, the quality of football is irrelevant to him. He is willing to take the temporary wrath of the fans, providing we stay up and get the cash in. However, as he is a fan, I see him being far less lenient with Pulis next season (after the cash Is secured), and if the football continues in the same manner. Then I think we will see a change of management very quickly!

(P.s.– I am not a Pulis fan and never will be. Was gutted when he joined but can understand the reasons why. The football is absolutely diabolical, and I would personally like to see him leave the club at the end of the season providing he keeps us up).
