Morning All,
Ahh, it takes me back. Only really started using the Brummie around 75/76 season, as the few games I got to with my Dad, (as he was a Blue nose really, but his weekend off coincided more with Baggies being at home, and us living in Smethwick) we usually ended up in the Halford Lane stand.
Songs that stand out in my teen addled brain were "Knees up Mother Brown", and the Zigger/ zagger chant.
Whenever you heard the beginings of DA ,da da da- da da da da, da da dada da da, OY, the hairs on my neck would rise as the crowd began to simultaneously chant and hop from one leg to the other, and the Brummie came alive.
Also, the "Faces" in the Brummie, like Bowie and the bloke with the big affro who stood on the right side, but I cannot remember his name, would wind up the youngsters at the back with shouts of Zigger, zagger, on your bike.
Match that stands out in my mind, 1979 FA Cup quarter final against Forest, ground packed with well over 40,000, was the loudest I have heard in my time.
Closely followed by the 1st Div playoff first leg against Bolton at the Hawthorns in 2001 , was it?
We scored 2 quick goals, then they equalised late in the second half, and we lost in the away leg but got promoted the following season. Was actually in the Smethwick for that game, but the Brummie was at its best I ve seen it that day since the advent of all seaters. To be fair, the whole ground was rocking that day.
