First off - I don't think Messi would even have tried it - it's not his style to do tricks like that. He'll beat his man with close control and speed of movement rather than flamboyance like that. A better example would be Ronaldo. Or Neymar. Or Daffy, a guy that used to play in our team. He'd try that three or four times a game and pulled it off more often than not. Drove us all nuts though, as it never really achieved anything.
Secondly - I'm sure the defender was pissed off about it (even though he got the better of Oduwa on that occasion). The difference is the Sun ran a full back-page story on it when it merited nothing more than a mention on Soccer AM's 'Failed Showboating' reel.
If Messi had tried it, the defender's whining would have been completely ignored by the Sun.
Now, thanks to the disgusting over-reaction by the media, Oduwa is a marked man.
